Florida State University (BME)
Hello young learners. I am a native Floridian following in the footsteps of some of my former teachers. I love teaching and learning, especially learning new things about people and music and sharing that knowledge. I have enjoyed lifelong friendships with some of my former teachers and their families, as well as built relationships my current and former students and their families. I serve on the Scholarship Committee for a Music scholarship in the name of one of my former music teachers offered to High School Seniors at a local school. Not only do I serve as an adjudicator, and help with fundraising, I also perform on the concert.
I am an music teacher with a South Florida School District. Not only do I have over 30 years of experience teaching general music, voice, recorder, dance, stage production, piano and beginning violin, I have taught elementary reading, and math for twenty years. I have been the pianist/organist for several local churches and directed and performed with church and community choirs throughout South Florida for many years. My experiences as a piano class instructor for 2 different Community Schools, my general music classes and choral directing experiences have allowed me the opportunity to teach students from 4 to 82 years old.
My work with small groups of students directly and positively improved their reading and math scores on State Standardized test. I usually worked with underachieving students. I was regularly asked to tutor in the absence of teachers in our Afterschool and Saturday School tutoring camps. I was requested when 2 different tutors took medical leave. I teach Math and Reading as I do Music. With example, practice, exploration, encouragement and praise.
I am an excellent Music educator because I am a Music student as well as a musician. My students see my passion for music, and I help them develop not only an understanding of how to make music, but how to understand and appreciate music and how it impacts history and our daily lives. I challenge my students to develop their skills and provide performance opportunities. Many of my students volunteer to attend before and/or afterschool rehearsals. My students not only learn music by Masters such as Mozart and Duke Ellington, but we learn appropriate contemporary music as well

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
