About Jarrett

I've been drawn to positions of education for years. Most recently, I was a financial basics teacher in Harlem, NY with a wonderful organization called Operation HOPE. My students were mainly in primary school, but I was able to attend and help set up larger lectures at NYU. A year before that, I taught at a primary school in Ghana called Heritage Academy. The school was established by a fellow F&M alumnus who is from the village, and I immediately sought him out to secure the opportunity. I was able to construct my own curriculum and teach two classes a day, followed by guided reading exercises with the students. Prior to my Ghanaian experience, I worked as a Verbal SAT Coach for a non-profit called, Let's Get Ready! at the Boys & Girls Club in Greenwich, CT. The function of Coach gave me my own group of 5 high school students and the ability to walk through my homework assignments with them. As a Verbal Coach, I also proofread all college essays and provided my e-mail in case we didn't have enough time to fully revise them. When I was a student, I had a heavy helping of SAT preparation, and I hold on to the tricks and tips I've learned along the way. My passion for teaching arises from my empathy, and my desire to see others succeed and grasp new concepts. My student's problems become my own in the classroom, and if necessary I will struggle through the material in my own time just as my student does. What I love is being able to have a trick up my sleeve; a new angle or perspective on the same old problem that gets a student excited about the material - even if for a brief time. All of those moments count enormously.

Math was a struggle for me, and sometimes still is now that I'm taking graduate level business courses. However, the basic functions of mathematics will never escape me, and I can pass down the knowledge that got me through my years of education and has me confident enough to excel in statistics and financial mathematics.

I'm passionate about people. Aside from the intangible, I've had exceptional success in college with high level sociology courses. It didn't occur to me to declare a minor in Sociology, I was just transfixed by the science. I can teach scientific method, group dynamics, socialization, sex, gender, stratification, etc. I just love the concepts.

English, and language in general are what I consider to be my greatest talents. I thoroughly enjoy the nitty-gritty of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, proofreading - not to mention the conceptual playground-for-tutors that is the SAT. Through my education, I've learned several techniques for speaking in public effectively - and through my father the CEO, the lesson of trial by fire (with appropriate preparation, of course).

Please feel free to contact me for scheduling, I have a fairly open schedule and I would be glad to help you succeed!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

Bachelor of Arts: English (Creative Writing), Former Verbal SAT Tutor

SAT Reading

B.A. in English (creative writing), former SAT Verbal tutor.

Sociology

In my undergraduate degree, I completed courses in Sociology amounting to applied sociological statistics, social psychology, and all related concepts and case studies. This is a passionate subject for me and I light up when I discuss it, mostly about Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo (the schools love them). Teaching in Ghana, I split the curriculum between English and Sociology for the summer.
