Welcome to my tutoring profile page. My name is Ross and I love teaching! I got into teaching later in life because I found it was a passion of mine. I hold a M.A. in Elementary Education and a Ed.S in Education Leadership. I am also now a FL Certified Reading teacher. I have been a classroom teacher in Broward County for 10 years. I have taught 1st, 3rd, 4th, Marine Science, and STEM. I have worked with all age groups K-6 and all varieties of learners. I enjoy seeing the light bulb of understanding going on in my students. The reason I enjoy tutoring is because of the personal one-on-one attention I can give to students. A well structured hour of tutoring can be extremely beneficial to a struggling student. I want to inspire confidence in my students and build a love of learning and inquisition.
The reason you should choose me as your tutor is because I will give your students the care and attention that will first capture their hearts and then their minds. My sessions will be upbeat and positive. I want my students to look forward to our sessions and get excited about learning.
I am currently teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Last year I taught 4th grade. This is the year that we focus on writing. I have students that can barely put a paragraph together, and by the end of the year they are able to put together a two-page essay referring back to original documents and citing evidence to support an opinion.
I also worked with students coming in on a third grade reading level and take them to a fifth grade reading level by the end of year. There is no substitution for practice and hard work.
I am well versed in the new standards and how they are built upon each year in elementary school. I can help remediate old skills from previous years, or I can prepare your students for upcoming school work. Whatever your area of concern, I can help your child.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I always prefer to make phone contact before our first session. It is also helpful if you have any old report cards or interim/conference papers. The more information I have about your child's strengths and weaknesses, the quicker I can help them. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been an effective classroom teacher in K-5 for over 10 years. I began as a special ed aide, then a teacher's assistant, then a substitute teacher, and finally a classroom teacher. I have taught 1st grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, and Science as a special for K-5. I hold a teaching license in Elementary Education from NY, FL, and CO. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education from Dowling College and have a Specialists's degree in Education Leadership from Barry University. I have tutored Math, Reading, and Writing for the past 5 years.
I have worked with kindergarten as well as 1st graders in the art of handwriting. I have also worked with older children correct their hand positions and pencil grip. Students are always eager to write the "right" way and show a more mature style.
