About Sabrina

Hello! I am Sabrina. Youth are my passion and I thoroughly enjoy working with students of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. I have marveled at how, with each student I have worked with, not only have I taught them something that they need help with, but during the process, they have taught me something about myself. Each interaction has and always will be priceless, because with youth, it may only take just that one moment of time working with them, for a passion or desire for learning to be ignited.

Two of the philosophies that I live by are as follows: "Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change" - Jim Rohn; and "Treat a child as though he already is the person he's capable of becoming" - Haim Ginott.

In regards to teaching, I am Florida certified in Elementary Education K-6 Teacher and also Exceptional Student Education. I have taught 5th grade for two years and will be teaching 4th grade this year. With all of the students that I teach, I assume a youth development approach. This is one where the child becomes empowered to reach within to draw upon their own skill sets to empower themselves and their peers. This is an approach where a student feels empowered to speak up and have their own voice. They learn to take the time to work independently and with others to solve challenges and overcome obstacles. In addition to youth development, I offer tremendous support to the student during their learning process and recognize that all students require different learning styles and techniques, usually adopting a combination of styles in order for the message to be fully received and absorbed. Also, I pay attention to the energy of the student. When teaching, I always use interactive, stimulating, and creative activities that will allow the energy of the lesson to remain dynamic and positive as possible. I want to make the learning environment fun, as it is not school, so I will usually incorporate games with key objectives that match the learning objectives for that particular student, if applicable. In regards to tutoring, I have worked with students one-on-one with homework help on a variety of school subjects, study skills and organization, academic counseling, proofreading, and grammar review. I have worked with students as young as first grade and as old as college-aged individuals.

In addition to working with youth of all ages, I am excited to work with Adults too. If you need to pass your TOEFL exam and develop college-level skills, I can be here to help you!

The element of teaching/tutoring that keeps me inspired to work with students is a particular moment that almost all students experience. It is that moment when a student who has struggled with grasping a concept or topic, gets that huge gratifying smile on their face, that excited look in their eyes and jumps up with glee as they finally understand what they struggled with for so long. That look, smile, and excited nature is what keeps me motivated to teach young persons. It is what humbles me as I think back to when I received tutoring assistance as a student. It is also what will always fuel my drive as I work with children within the academic arena.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology. I have completed several hours of college-level coursework on this subject. I have specialized in Cultural and Biological Anthropology.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am FL and DC certified to teach Elementary Education K-6. I have taught 5th grade for 2 years in public school and will be teaching 4th grade this upcoming school year. I have been trained in Common Core and have experience teaching students who have taken the PARCC exam, as well as the Next Generation Science Exam adapted for the District of Columbia.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is a subject that I would be happy to help your child with. All of the fundamentals learned during this math stage are critical for a student's intrigue for math in the future. I would love to help your child and make it really engaging as we go along!

I taught 5th grade Elementary Science for two years. I am FL and DC Elementary K-6 license certified. Apart from teaching this subject daily, I have also tutored with homework help for science after school.
