Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I can assist students in preparing for the math portion of the ACT. I am well versed in algebra, geometry, and some trigonometry.

ADD/ADHD

As a certified ESE teacher, I work with students on a daily basis with ADD/ADHD.

Algebra 1

I am able to tutor algebra 1 as it is one of my areas of strength. I have worked with students with a wide range of needs and ability levels, and will be able to help any student make progress through their algebra experience. Algebra can be confusing, but with the right mindset it is no more difficult than 2+2=4.
Once I know what level you are on, and what material needs to be covered we can achieve success.

American History

I have a minor in history, and my biggest area of interest is American History. I can help you with historical facts, as well as how to link cause and effect between events. I still study history, and always look for ways to increase my knowledge.
I can tutor from precolonial times to modern day occurrences.

Aspergers

I have worked with individuals with Aspergers throughout my time as a teacher and advocate.

Autism

I am certified/endorsed to teach elementary education, ESE, ESOL, Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum, and Reading. I have worked with children, teens, and adults with autism. I understand that each person is different, but there are strategies that are very effective in working with individuals with autism.
Some of the strategies that are effective are: rigid structure, following a set routine, eliminating sensory distractions, allowing movement as needed, giving extended time to process information, giving extended time to give feedback, accepting feedback in a variety of means, and allowing for sensory or functional breaks. In addition it is a good practice to do an interest inventory to determine what they like and don't like. This allows for more positive and tangible reinforcement. Most importantly it is necessary to get to know the person you are working with. You can overcome many obstacles when you know what is causing them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am elementary education certified through the HOUSSE process for highly qualified teachers. In addition I am Elementary Education Certified through the American Board for the Certification of Teacher Excellence. I work with disabled and non disabled students, and have over 9 years' experience working on elementary level materials. I continue to work with students in all subject areas. I am able to utilize many strategies that engage elementary aged students, and help them learn in the manner that is best for them.

Elementary Math

I have taught elementary level math for the last ten years. I am aware of strategies and skills that are required to build from basic operations to more complex applied math.
I have passed the certification exam for Elementary Education through the American Board. I have Housse highly qualified status in Elementary education as well.

European History

I have a minor in history and a background in all areas of history. I know many of the early histories of Europe, and will be able to assist with any area that needs more understanding.

General Computer

I have had training in basic computer operations. I have also taken course work in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I understand the basic working of the computer, and can assist in troubleshooting many problems. I can install and set up most systems.

Geometry

I am certified to teach math including geometry skills. I have worked with students at various levels of understanding in this area. I will work on skills that students need help in. I will work on remediation of any skills that are preventing success in a particular area.

Grammar

I have worked with students at many levels of writing ability. I can work from the basics to more complex writing tasks. We can work on sentence development, syntax, semantics, basic grammar conventions, and spacing.

I have helped students develop the ability to follow a writing prompt to complete a written assignment. I have worked with students with brainstorming, drafting, editing, and developing a finished product.

Phonics

I am reading endorsed, and trained to teach students who are beginning or struggling readers. I have been trained using LETRS strategies. I have been trained in the Reading Mastery Program, Phonics for Reading Program, and the Wilson Reading Program. I have been trained in how to administer various assessments including: the Diagnostic Assessments of Reading (DAR), The San Diego Quick Assessment of Reading, and various other informal assessments associated with each specific program.

Political Science

I have a bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. I also have a Masters Degree in Public Administration. I understand how ancient governments formed and fell apart, and how modern government has evolved as a result of what happened in the past. I understand the different types of government, and different political philosophies.

Prealgebra

I have worked with students at all ability levels. I can show students how to set up problems, and address issues with linear equations, functions, etc. I believe in breaking down the material so that it can be more easily understood.

Reading

I work with students at their level of need whether it is basic phonics instruction, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, or a combination of the above. Reading is essential for success in life, and my goal is make sure that all students are prepared for the future.

Social Studies

I have a bachelor's degree in political science, and a master's degree in public administration. I have a minor in history, and I have taken several courses in geography. I am well versed in American History, World History, Government, and Economics.

Special Needs

I am a certified ESE teacher who is highly qualified. I have nine years' experience in the classroom, and fourteen years experience overall working with people with disabilities. I have over 1000 in service points and course work related to my field. I have taught students in center schools, hospital/home-bound students, students in self contained classrooms, and have work as a support facilitator for students who are in general education class that need extra assistance.

Writing

I have worked with elementary, middle, high school and even college level writers. I am able to work with them on the proper conventions of writing that make up a good paper. I show them ways to make writing an expression of themselves while at the same time relaying information to the reader that is easily understood.

Quickly Adjusts to Student's Style of Learning — Christopher is an outstanding tutor. He's like a magician with a bag of tricks up his sleeve. If one approach doesn't work, he reaches in and grabs another. My daughter shared with me after her last session that she learned what she needed in the ONE session (hour and a half) with Chris vs. weeks of struggling even with help from her teacher on the same subject matter in geometry. She is growing m ...
