Good communication is a huge part of what a student learns in his or her educational career. That's why I selected communications as my major. Drama was my minor, and, when I taught ESL literacy, I found myself acting out words in order to build a student's vocabulary.
Next, I became a tutor for students with disabilities at the college level and discovered the creativity of devising methods that worked with the abilities that the students had while working around those that they didn't have. I carried a caseload of students each semester, tutoring in a number of subjects. My students had many successes and I learned a great deal in the process. More recently, I spent five years as a lab assistant and tutor for ESL students and enjoyed the different challenge of devising ways of assisting speakers of other languages in conquering English.
If one approach is not effective, another will be. For sixteen years, I've been putting my communication and drama skills creatively to work getting students where they need to go. Students who have worked with me will testify to this. See if my abilities match your needs.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Five years of work as a tutor and lab assistant for ESL students has taught me to tailor programs to individual students' needs. Some have needed to get U.S. licenses or other qualifications to return to professions they had in their home countries. I welcome a variety of challenges.
I passed the proofreading test with a 100 score and often work with students on submitting correct work. The student has the ideas and I work with them on the details. The student often learns much in the process that applies to their subject area and to the general study of English.
I have a four year degree in speech and have done speech coaching at the college level. A number of students that I've worked with have done well in this subject and actually enjoyed it. My philosophy is that each speech student has something to say, knowledge to impart, and insight to share. I assist them in bringing out their own personalities and personal qualities, employing those effectively while speaking in front of a group. Whatever a student's path is in life, what is learned in public speaking will be of value.
I'm a writing coach, which means I assist students with their learning of different types of writing. Using a good English handbook is a skill that involves marking areas where the student is having difficulty and noting where errors are occurring. Writing for speaking is its own skill, and that's another coaching area in which I've helped students to succeed.
