About Christopher

With 15 years of teaching/tutoring experience in a variety of subjects and a M.A.Ed., I have worked successfully with all levels of students; elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. I am very patient and a good listener. Our sessions are customized for you.

Whether your difficulty is missing background information, quickly learning new subject matter, developing better study skills, or overcoming low motivation, I can help you. Individual attention and materials are prepared according to your student needs.

Throughout my career as a teacher, I have had the opportunity to instruct a diverse group of students. I participate in numerous professional development opportunities, which allow me to meet teachers and students from all over the world. I also work for a student travel company in the summer and lead student trips to various countries.

I have worked in a variety of elite boarding schools all of which require a large time commitment to the student body and school. I have often had to communicate with overseas agents from China, Brazil, and South Korea about the educational concerns of students I taught. I have even dealt with celebrity parents. I also worked with various families who home-school their children. I believe I am a great communicator which makes me a great teacher.

If you are interested in working with a dedicated professional with passion for education and a love of learning, I am sure I can help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have helped students with ACT English prep for over 5 years. I scored a 31 on the English section of the test.

I have worked with students for the last 8 years with Specialized Learning Disabilities included ADD/ADHD. I have worked with students to develop strategies to cope with their distractibility, impulsivity, and hyper activity. I am trained in multi-sensory methods and Harvard's Multiple Intelligence principles emphasized by Project Zero and Professor Howard Gardner.

I worked at a technical institute for adult students and assisted some of adults with the General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics Knowledge sections. They were skilled in the technical parts of the test but needed help with the the general sections. After working with them, most did very well, and were able to select from various options given to them by their recruiter.

Career Development

I taught a career planning and development class at an Adult Education Center which included instruction in the creation of resumes, locating job opportunities, presentation at the interview, and follow up skills. 95% of the students I worked with found the process for seeking employment much easier after taking my class.

College Counseling

As an advisor to high school students, I often advised them on college decisions. I work with the admissions office of Amherst College to help get students from South Florida admitted into the college. I organize college tours for students. I also help students on their college applications and essays.

I have worked for years with students with specialized learning disabilities including Dyslexia. I specialize in the Orton-Gillingham Method which uses Simultaneous Multisensory Instruction. I work to advocate for the student and advise parents on how they should manage their relationships with their child's teachers in order to ensure educational success.

Elementary (K-6th)

In order to prepare students for the challenges they face in each consecutive year of their education, I have successfully completed academic remediation courses with children in Elementary school. Through an extended day program I tutored pre-k through 6th graders on a variety of subjects with a concentration on Math, Reading, and comprehension skills in order to assist them with their homework and to enhance the schools curriculum by supplementing their work with other material. I have also taught Foreign Language in an elementary school.

With a Master's Degree in Language Instruction, I have over 10 years of experience working with many people learning English as a Second Language including foreign exchange students.

I have assisted numerous people with GED preparation. I worked for an adult training center where many needed to pass the GED in order to obtain funding to continue their education. It was one of my duties to help these students pass the GED.

I am trained in Lindamood-Bell and Orton-Gillingham techniques that specifically deal with phonological and orthographic processing. I have been working with students with difficulty in phonemic awareness for 3 years and have seen improvement in comprehension over short periods of time with frequent sessions.

I majored in Psychology at Amherst College. I have completed internships doing social psychology work and completed my senior seminar in Educational Psychology. I have also taught a high school psychology course.

Public Speaking

I have taken many public speaking courses. I have also presented at conferences. I have also participated in Speech and Debate competitions and am a member of Toastmasters which is a non profit organization where you develop public speaking and leadership skills through practice.

I have been trained in a variety of reading techniques including Linda Mood-Bell and literacy development strategies. I have developed reading programs for students who are below or are falling below grade level and have improved their comprehension over a short period of time.

I have been a Spanish teacher for 9 years. I have my Master's Degree in World Language Instruction. I have taught in Private College Preparatory Schools where students have gone on to take AP Spanish and receive college credit for their scores.

I have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham techniques which are language-based, multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible pathways to assist in the understanding of phonetics and reading. I also have training in Linda Mood-Bell techniques which focus on pronunciation and phonemic awareness.

Because of my work at elite private schools and my behind the scenes knowledge of what it takes to make it into these top ranked schools, I have worked with many students wishing to not only do well on the SSAT but to gain admittance into various schools. The SSAT is like any other standardized test. With my knowledge of test taking strategies, review of the material that makes up the test, and practice, I have helped many students to achieve their goals. The SSAT is just one piece of an important puzzle to assuring acceptance and or higher financial assistance at a selective secondary school.

Study Skills

For over 10 years as a classroom teacher, I worked with groups of students who were my advisees on study skills. We worked on everything from organizational issues to test taking strategies. I have also worked with home schooled students to prepare them for various entrance exams and to organize themselves with online classes.

I have taught a TEAS preparation course. The course reviewed three topics. The first was: English comprehension skills assessed in the exam including punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, spelling and test taking strategies.

The second was: math comprehension skills including whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, ratio/proportions and test taking strategies.

And the third was: General Science Understanding skills which include, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, and test taking strategies.

I have experience working with individuals to master the material by reviewing the exam with them and teaching them the skills they were lacking in order to be successful. My clients have a great rate of passing this test.

I have worked with students on specific writing programs including Handwriting Without Tears and have also implemented my own program including techniques to improve fine motor skills so that they have better control of their grip and hand movements.

Miracle Worker

Chris tutors my 6th grader in both math and reading and does an amazing job. My son has ADHD and LD and was very vocal about NOT wanting to see a tutor. Now he actually enjoys it, and has since the beginning. Chris knows how to connect with kids and explains concepts very well.
