About Michael

Throughout my career I have always been the go-to person when associates and friends have questions about how to do things. I have a lifelong interest in learning new things. I have wide background and experience in a variety of subjects and interests ranging from science, music, art, cooking, travel, songwriting, geology, insurance and financial services, writing, web building and design, sales and marketing, and photography to name just a few of my many interests.

I have worked one-on-one and in small groups and have worked with over 300 students that I have mentored and taught the essentials of subjects ranging from photography to computers, sales and marketing, and a host of other subjects.

I received a Bachelor of Science in Geology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico. Early in my career I had my own business as a geologist in the oil and gas industry. I then worked in sales and marketing in the insurance and financial services business. I am presently working as a photographer and musician.

Along the way I taught Microsoft DOS classes as an adjunct instructor at Nashville State Community College and have helped many individuals gain confidence in using personal computers and to learn new software or to help problem solve technical issues.

As an award winning environmental fine art photographer I enjoy both the thrill in capturing the world around me through the art of photography as much as I enjoy teaching people how to understand how to best use their equipment to take exceptional photos on their own.

I took guitar lessons when I was 10 years old and my interest in learning and improving as a musician as never stopped. I currently perform locally on Amelia Island and have performed in Nashville before moving to Florida. Music is a fascinating way to express one's self and it can be a whole lot of fun once you learn the basics.

I enjoy working with anyone who has an interest in learning because that is what inspires me most.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Guitar

I first started playing guitar 50 years ago and have always loved both learning and improving my ability to play as well as to help others along the way in improving their technique. I enjoy helping guitar students who are at the beginner level. Understanding the fret board and fingering positions for chords, song structures, key or numbers system for music, and different styles from pop, blues, and rock, and encouragement are just a few of the elements in how I help beginners get started on a life's journey into guitar and music.

Microsoft Windows

I have worked with computers since the early 1970's as far as operating, repairing, and updating them. I taught MS DOS as an adjunct instructor at Nashville State Community College. I have been the go-to person in various office environments that I have worked in over the past 40 years when associates are having difficulties with their Windows systems. I am currently using WIN10 and have provided individualized training for users of each version of Windows since the 90's. I have 2 Bachelor degrees and use Windows OS exclusively. I know that computers can be extremely frustrating for many users and I have plenty of experience helping users in tense situations find answers to their problems as well as increase their level of confidence in their understanding at whatever level of experience they may have.

Photography

I have been teaching photography locally for the past 10 years at our local art association. I have taught in small groups of up to 12 people as well as personalized one-on-one instruction which I tailor to the specific needs of the student. I am an award winning environmental fine art photographer well versed in both equipment, styles, and techniques. Even in small groups I make sure that every student has ample personalized time with me so I am sure that they get the most from each session. The key for me is to find out specifically what it is that the student wants to learn and then be able to show them the way so that they can gain confidence in their abilities.
