I have always loved learning and that led me to teaching - a profession that allows me to pass my enthusiasm on to others. Creative, hands-on, discovery-style learning keeps students engaged and excited. For many years I have worked after school and during the summer as a tutor with small groups and individual students to help them improve their skills and grow in self-confidence. My last twenty-one years of teaching have been at the elementary level, but I also have five years' experience teaching middle school English. My master's program focused on reading and I have trained in the Lindamood Bell LiPs specialized reading technique, as well as the Singapore math program. I enjoy reading, creative projects, walking on the beach and being a mother and grandmother.
Most importantly, I am creative and enthusiastic about learning. I can even make grammar fun! I'm a "read-a-holic" myself and enjoy a wide range of literature. My undergraduate degree was in English and American literature. Through the years I have participated in The National Writing Project, storytellers' workshop and many reading/writing workshops. I spent two years as a writer and editor for a respected educational magazine. I am a good writer myself and can help students master the formats and techniques for essay, narrative, and research writing.
If you think I'm the kind of tutor who can help you accomplish your goals, please contact me. I look forward to meeting you, discussing your needs and setting up a plan tailored for you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
