I have been a private tutor since 1979. Having logged thousands of hours in one-on-one tutoring over the past 38 years, I can assure any prospective student that you will not find a more genuine tutor. I am not a classroom teacher who happens to tutor on the side. As a matter of fact, I am not a teacher at all. I started out as a really good student and got my start showing other students how to be excellent as well. I would not settle for anything but top of the class. Some of my first tutoring gigs were paid with ice cream treats in my school cafeteria. "Sure I'll help you with that homework. Just go get me an orange creamsicle and we'll get you all straightened out". After my brain got flexing, I realized I could make real money at tutoring. So I set up shop going house to house on my bicycle for $3.50 per hour. Many things have changed since 1979. I am now much older, have tutored all five of my own kids, and I still approach every session with a desire to get my student smarter.
I have B.S. (3.92) and M.S. (4.0) degrees in mechanical engineering and am a co-inventor of a patent on a pair of surgical telescopes (1994) used in deep cavity procedures. Having been a member of Mensa, I am able to show students how smart students think through problems. For fun, I have scored perfect 800 SAT math scores several times. I tutor algebra, geometry, trig, calculus, and physics, and I specialize in math SAT topics. There are dozens of important topics that need to be addressed before mastering the SAT. In Florida, a really good SAT score can be worth up to $16,000 in Bright Futures Scholarships.
My lessons are fun, yet effective. Please be sure to review my Wyz-Ant testimonials and ratings. They are some of the best tutor ratings in the area. I work out of an office in Englewood so I can maximize my time spent tutoring. On any given night, I could end up facing kids in Algebra, Geometry, Trig or Calculus--and any topics within those classes. So I have to have great recall of material and be ready to explain how to do just about anything that comes my way. Many tutors are not able to do that. I strictly focus on just a few topics. You might find tutors who claim to be experts in tons of topics, just use common sense. For example, what was your tutor's GPA in college? or SAT score? Final Point--Would you want your kid to learn how to play baseball from Average "utility man" Joe or Willie Mays? Ding-Ding. You get the point. I started out as a really good
I was very impressed how much my daughter learned in just a short one hour lesson. He’s very energetic and enthusiastic about teaching.
We have already booked another two hour session for Iris tomorrow afternoon. We believe he is well worth what he’s charging.
We look forward to using Larry when she gets stuck on her math lessons.
My son loved his first lesson and walked away feeling much more confident and excited about math. He particularly appreciated Larry's ability to sense when he had grasped the material and when he needed more explanation so that the pace was just right.
In the one hour of tutoring, Larry taught me to be confident in myself, to do more than the required work, and simple ways to work Geometry problems.
What I liked most about Larry was his direct approach to teaching and his voice held my attention. So far, in my first session, I have learned that I can definitely do this!
Just took my first lesson and Larry was great! He clarified every question I had. I can tell that he is going to greatly help my understanding of pre-calculus and trigonometry!
Larry D. gave me various ways to solve problems with easier steps to remember how to find the conclusion. I feel more confident with just one lesson and feel that if I continue with him, I will eventually be excited to go to class and learn more. His teaching style is great and I can't wait to go again. He is a great tutor and I would recommend him for anyone that is struggling in a particular subject that he teaches, especially math.
Quote from my daughter ," I learn more from him in one hour than I learn from my teacher at school in a week."
Larry is an awesome tutor. He shows me how to do the problems and then has me work through them. He is very patient, explains clearly and gives visual examples of the explanation.
Our daughter has been working on SAT prep and has already seen an improvement in her practice test scores after just a month!
Larry had to start at basic math that I forgot years ago and bring me into the world of calculus without any prior experience. His love for math and enthusiasm made the time go by quickly and kept me pushing myself to learn. Because of his ease in teaching and extensive knowledge on the subject, I not only learned the formulas, I excelled in the class with one of the highest grades.
Larry is an excellent teacher. I am very happy with how fast and clear he teaches and manages to cover a lot of material in a short time.
I was in an accelerated college level math class, when I first meet with Mr. D. I had a low C grade, and feared failing the class. I just received my final exam grade, and I received an A (93%). I owe most of the credit to Mr. D., and his teaching techniques. I am now graduating with my AA and will continue to pursue higher education. I now know I can call Mr. D and he always makes time for his students. Even on short notice.
After the first session Evan had true confidence about his ability for Algebra and was actually looking forward to the test in the next couple of days to show the teacher that he now has an understanding of the current topics.
As a parent, my hope was he would "endure" his math classes. He has been struggling on his own. And began dreading classes and avoiding assignments due to his lack of understanding. Today he was eager to show his grasp and confidence of the subject. Who knew there could be an eagerness for his math classes?
Marina looks forward to her weekly lesson
With Larry. He is able to explain things to her so that she understands. He has helped her improve not only her grades but her self confidence!
My son has been going to Larry for nearly a year and approximately 20 sessions. I never review early in a process as time will tell the real story. I have no complaints. Larry is very accommodating. My son communicates with him via text and they work out scheduling issues...I do not need to be involved, very nice! This is also a great experience for my son...to advocate for himself and ask for help. Larry's style is very adaptive to the individual student. Even my son has made that comment. If a teenager can see that, it must be true! After each session Larry posts a narrative on what they covered and he has consistently done that even though I have never rated his performance or provided feedback. My son's confidence has improved, as has his grades, and all of our stress levels have decreased. I absolutely recommend Larry's tutoring services.
I was searching for a tutor for my calculus class, when I came across this website and found a list of tutors for the subject. Once, I went through the list, I found Larry's profile and decided to give it a shot. I am so glad that I did, because I learned so many tips and tricks on the subject. Larry is a very nice, patient tutor who actually took the time to make sure that I got the material. I passed my final exam with an "A" and got an overall "A" in my calculus class. I definitely recommend Larry to anybody who wants to pass their class, but also to really understand the material that is being presented.
Larry can get inside the thought process of his student and help him/her understand what he/she needs to do by working within his/her frame of reference the learning process grows exponentially.
I simply can't say enough good things about Larry! He helped my son with AP Calculus and Honors Physics and we could not have been happier. My son got an A in both classes. Larry knows the material inside out, and is able to explain it really well. He also instills confidence in his students which is very important. Larry lives 40 minutes from our house but it was well worth the drive. He was also incredibly flexible and, whenever possible, tried to fit in extra times if needed, before an upcoming test. This showed how much he cared. It was this combination of caring and ability that translated in my son'e successful grades. Larry is also one of the kindest people you will ever meet. We are extremely grateful to him which is why I am writing this review. If you work with him, you will not be disappointed!
Larry brings energy and exceptional knowledge to each lesson. The first thing that you'll notice is his passion to help his students. My daughter will be taking the SAT for the first time this coming Saturday and I can say with confidence, even before she takes the test, that she is far more prepared and confident than she would have been without this tutoring.
My daughter requires an instructor who challenges her and also conveys a passion for sharing their knowledge. Those qualities come through loud and clear with Lawrence.
I highly recommend Larry's services, and I will continue to utilize his help as we have at least one more SAT in our future.
I have been to other tutors. I found Mr. D an excellent and patient teacher. Highly recommended, especially since he was so great with AP calculus which a lot of tutors don't teach.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Calculus is a great course. I learned it in engineering school and have been tutoring it for about 30 years. You don't find a lot of tutors who are up for it, but I really enjoy it.
I first got interested in Physics in engineering school. It is a wonderful course for kids to finally answer the question, "When am I ever going to use this"? The idea of using math to calculate when something will hit the ground or how things will behave after they collide is really eye-opening.
In order to be a good SAT math student, one has to be very skilled at using their math skills in clever ways. The SAT people reward students who can do that. I have been tutoring SAT math for over 30 years and have scored perfect math scores several times on real tests. I have taken the SAT with my own kids in the room. You know what they say, "A family that takes the SAT together, stays together."
