I have 20 years of experience in education teaching Special Education in grades 3-11. I have taught all subjects and held certifications in Special Education, Elementary Education, and Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum. I have done tutoring and have also worked with home bound students. Having worked in Special Education, I am experienced in adapting to learning styles and individual situations to enhance learning.
I enjoy tutoring because it allows me the opportunity to work one on one with students. It makes it easy to know the student's strengths and weaknesses, and develop lessons to fit the specific needs of the student. This makes the student more successful. Success brings confidence and motivation which can lead to academic excellence.
I have taught Math to students in grades 3-11 including Algebra and Geometry. I am very strong working with students that are having trouble with fractions, decimals, and word problems.
I have assisted students with reading from basic phonics through FCAT and used a variety of well known programs.
I have taught core academics including Science and Social Studies to elementary and middle grade students. I am very strong in history and geography. I have also taught English and assisted students with improving writing skills and use of grammar.
I have extensive experience with the Spalding method of phonics.
While working with students in the basics of Reading and Math I strive to incorporate all subjects into my teaching. I try to explore Science, Social Studies, and Literature to seek out areas of interest, increase motivation and success, and instill a love of learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
