About Sarah

I am a dedicated teacher with a current and valid teaching certification in Connecticut, grades K-6. I have taught fourth and fifth grade as well as middle school students in a remedial reading and language arts setting. My undergraduate degree focused in Linguistics and ESL/ESOL courses, History, and Elementary Education. I received a master's degree in 2006 focusing in reading and language arts literacy.

Teaching small groups of students and tutoring is a passion of mine. Learners have increased academic achievement when the individual instruction focuses on remediation or maintaining current skills. We can personalize the learning program you are seeking, while setting achievable short term goals.

I am available to teach elementary or middle school students learning English because I have a strong education in literacy instruction and ESL courses. I can personalize math instruction to help the learner increase his/her academic capacity in certain math concepts. When I taught public schools, my students' test scores and assessments demonstrated significant growth in reading comprehension and writing. My former students deepened their reading comprehension and increased reading levels each year. I am enthusiastic about helping students improve their writing skills with specific word choices, sentence fluency, voice and personality. I am also available to help students with homework, long term projects, or specific areas of need: grammar, study skills and time management, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to read my teaching profile.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught fourth and fifth grade for 6 years. I have also taught reading in middle school. I am certified in all content areas: math, reading, language arts, writing, science and social studies.

Phonics

I am a certified k-6 elementary school teacher with a master's in literacy instruction. I have taught phonics using word work activities. Those activities include: word study, grouping words according to vowel patterns, sounds, consonants, diphthongs, blends, digraphs, etc. Also, I have helped students build words at the phonic level and work up to more complex words by adding on sound and letter Combinations to an original word.

Reading

I have a masters in language arts and literacy with a focus in diagnosing students with reading struggles. I am trained to provide remediation instruction to help learners improve their reading abilities with fluency, vocabulary, decoding, comprehension, and phonics. I also love teaching writing and science, and am certified to teach k-6 in FL and CT.

Study Skills

I am a certified K-6 Elementary school teacher. Over the years I have helped many students with time management and homework skills. I can help students with strategies to set goals for work completion and setting deadlines. I can help students manage their work by dividing assignments into smaller tasks and manageable portions.
