Bio

I have a degree in Education and a Master's from St. John's University. I have been an educator for 40 years. After retiring from NYS I have continued to work with students through the Dancing Classrooms Program in which I am certified. I have also volunteered at the Crossroads School in Boynton Beach.

After retiring from NYS I have continued to work with students through the Dancing Classrooms Program in which I am certified. I have also volunteered at the Crossroads School in Boynton Beach.

These varied experiences have contributed to my desire to stay connected to teaching and learning. As I work with my students in ballroom dance class I am constantly amazed at their willingness to try new things and embrace the unknown. They are actually teaching me to remain open to all possibilities.

I am passionate about books and reading, I enjoy discussing stories, helping children to write creatively and to express themselves clearly.

I have extensive knowledge if phonics from my years as a primary school teacher.

I believe that learning should be fun. I like to laugh with my students and encourage them to think out of the box. I am not a proponent of worksheets and rote learning. There should be a sense of wonder and a feeling of pride and accomplishment at the end of every day.

Phonics

I taught phonics to both kindergartners and first graders for 8 years. I continued to include phonetics while teaching reading in grades 2 and 3. Phonics is key to mastering the mechanics of reading for most students, however it is true that some students have great difficulty learning phonetically because of dyslexia or other perceptual challenges.
