It was my son's first lesson with Laurie. She is very experienced and nice teacher. She observed my son's weak subjects and at the end of the lesson we had a very short but effective meeting. I am sure that she is the right teacher for my son. She has own teaching style that we need. Thank you Laurie.
Laurie prepares carefully for her lessons, and adapts to my child's way of learning. She is very patient and calm, "going with the flow" until her student can focus again.
Laurie, helped my daughter improved her reading scores and challenge her with different reading styles and techniques. She helped her become faster at reading.
We've only met with Mrs. Laurie one time so far, but my son loved her and so did I. Can't wait for our Next session!! Great prices and you could go to her she will come to you.
Ms. Laurie is so kind, really giving my child the tools she needs to learn to read. She is using her own resources to challenging my child just enough. It's great to see a child happy and gaining confidence!
My son can be a handful and she had the patience of a saint, was able to grab his attention and keep him focused.
Ms Laurie is absolutely amazing. She gives my daughter so such confidence and is always reassuring her she will be just fine. My daughter loves her
She's been tutoring my daughter in reading and she puts her all into helping you achieve your goals. With her educational background and knowledge she's the best, so thankful for her
My daughter was behind in both math and reading after working with Laurie for only a couple of weeks she has completely caught up in reading. Now we're working on math, love her!!
Laurie has done a wonderful job with my kids. Within these weeks I have seen growth and confidence in each one of them. She is really helping to advance them from their school level. She does a great job with them.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a student achieving my BA degree in college, I took many classes in the field of Criminal Justice and the Juvenile Court system. I also attended seminars in this field of study so I would be able to achieve one of my goals, that of working with youngsters in need. As part of my desire to help young people, I also took social psychology and behavioral management to get a better understanding of young adults who seemed not to fit into the societal norm. As a Homebound Instructor and Tutor, I was assigned to work with children and young adults who were waiting for alternative placement within the school district. Afterwards, I worked as a tutor with Criminal Justice majors who attended college. Theses students had a greater understand of this field and had success in achieving their degree. I have always acted as a guide to learning for my students, but when needed, I assisted in their learning process, I became their mentor.
I have been tutoring many students who are in grades K-6. I tutor phonics, reading, letter recognition, and numeric recognition. In instructing students in achieving academically in advancing their reading skills I use "chunking", which enables the student to better comprehend the section, passage or story they have read. I also have youngsters phonetically sound out words. When working phonetically with students I use "blending" as an ea In letter recognition and numerical recognition I prefer to use the rote method. My students have academically achieved in the academic studies.
I received my Bachelors of Arts degree at the State University of New York at Purchase, New York where I majored in History. I believe some students require individual help enabling them to better achieve their educational goals.
As a teacher I emphasize the importance of being able to write clearly. Even though this is a computerized world handwriting is still essential. As I worked with students in various subject areas I always had students write paragraphs in cursive and corrected them appropriately.
I have been a Homebound Instructor/Teacher in Reading and in order to read and speak properly phonics is important. I have taken many courses in Reading and Literacy. Phonics is always emphasized in reading. Students must know how to pronounce a word/words. When working with students who have difficulty with reading the sounding out of the word is of vital importance. I also have used sight and chunking of words to enable the student to better grasp the reading process. In both these areas I have had great success. As stated before, I have taken many courses in the field of Reading and Literacy and used these techniques to make the student feel confident in their ability to speak and read.
I have taken many courses in Reading and Literacy while achieving my teaching certification. I have tutored many students in Reading and Reading Comprehension. I use sight words and "chunking," which enable a student to have a better grasp of words. My students have achieved great success in school.
As a teacher, I have always stressed the need for strong study skills in a student. The proper study skills enables the student to succeed in his/her classwork, I created study skill sheets in various subject areas to enable the student to be able to retain the lesson for today. I kept my students on track and had great success when students followed my study guides.
As I tutored LD students I used study guides in developing an IEP for them.
