Fitchburg State University (English Literature,)
I am a native American English speaker and have had two careers in my life, both of which I enjoy immensely. I have been a nurse and a teacher. For the purposes of this page, however, I will discuss my background in teaching English and testing. I have always loved to both learn and teach and consider myself a lifelong learner. I began teaching English in 2004 at a community center as a break from nursing. I went as far as to get a degree in it and graduated in 2010. I always have attempted to maintain a balance with my two careers and love helping students whose first language is not English improve in order that they may realize their dreams.
My teaching experience is varied. I have taught adult learners in a classroom setting in which the only possible way to communicate was in English. I was lucky enough to manage an after school program for middle schoolers out of my home. I have taught SAT testing, NCLEX preparation for nursing students whose first language is not English, and privately tutored students who chose to prepare for private school. My students have come from all over the world. I have taught on Skype and in person. What I love most is that I learn as much, if not more, than what I teach. I have been welcomed in to families, participated in birthdays, weddings, and graduations, and been introduced to wonderful homecooked meals from East Asia to South America. I try to find out what students' goals are and help them achieve them. When appropriate, such as with children and teens, I try to involve students' families in the learning process.
I teach conversational English, as well as grammar, literature, and vocabulary. I can proofread your work and make recommendations for better ways to write what you want to say. I will encourage you, but in order to get results, the key is practice, practice, practice! This means homework. I prefer when students communicate with me between meetings with questions, rather than coming unprepared to class.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a native speaker of North American English and have a Bachelors degree in English Literature and English Secondary Education.
