About Bonny

I am a Public Speaking/Communication Coach with a broad background in teaching, writing, and speech critique. I'm motivated by a love for people and a desire to transform lives. "Success through Effective Communication" is my motto. In my hometown, Cincinnati, Ohio, I earned B.F.A. and M.A. degrees in Radio-TV. I enlarged my experience to include teaching of all age groups, public relations, and advertising sales for radio stations and the "South Florida Business Journal."

As an Adjunct Professor in Florida community colleges and universities, I have taught Public Speaking, Acting, and Speech.

One of the first to use the video critique method, I have trained business executives and other teachers. Part-time teaching in public and private schools led to private tutoring of individuals.

I have taught at:
* Florida Language School
* Broward Community College
* Florida Atlantic University
* Lynn University
* Hamilton County and Cincinnati Public Schools
* Cincinnati Country Day School

I look forward to serving your individual needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

As a member of a non-denominational church for twenty years, I've learned how to rightly divide the word of truth. I do not say this with a prideful heart. The Lord has given me knowledge and wisdom to share through the teachings of a real apostle.
I have instructed people in my home for twelve years. I attend weekly continuing education at a bible teaching website. I do not seek a theological degree.

I have taught business writing in high schools and community schools.
In past years, I owned and managed real estate rental properties.
I have had a real estate sales license in the state of Florida.

The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) have replaced the CLAST as the basic skills test for teacher certification. Recently, I tutored a math teacher who had difficulty with the essay portion of the test. My liberal arts background and more than twenty years of teaching writing and reading qualify me to teach those subjects.

I love food and cooking! I have weighed the same for fifty years! 110 pounds! That's because I know how to eat, when to eat and what to eat. I can teach any recipe and practical aspects of food preparation and cooking to children and adults.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a tutor and substitute teacher I have twenty-plus years of experience in two states! Locally, I have substituted at Cincinnati Public Schools, Armleder Academy, Cincinnati Country Day School, Indian Hill Schools, and Madeira Schools. K-6th is my favorite age group(in a class )because they are generally obedient and their behavior is manageable.
I relate well to children of this age, and have tutored many individuals.

I have taught middle school English at Lake Worth High School after passing qualifications at Broward Community College. My focus is on vocabulary enrichment, reading comprehension and writing. If a student is struggling with a research paper or essay, I will make sure that all grammar, punctuation and organization meet the standards of excellence.

I have taught ESOL in public schools and privately.
I have studied Spanish in secondary school and college.
My Hispanic friends are from many countries; Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico, Panama, Central America, and Brazil.
I have also taught students from China, S. Korea and the Middle East.

Grammar is so important to students learning English as a second language. English is the most difficult of all languages. But I make it simple with a step-by-step approach. We study verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, vocabulary and easy conversation. I also video my students and give you the video to take home. You will enjoy learning grammar with me!

In the 1950's, I was taught cursive writing in elementary school as an English language requirement. "Logic of English" states that one of the reasons for widespread underachievement in handwriting, spelling, and reading is failure to learn this skill. Also, dyslexia and remedial reading centers around the United States recommend teaching cursive handwriting. Therefore, as an English reading and writing teacher, I perfect this skill in my students.

For the past several years I have worked as an online proofreader and editor for an educational service that assists foreign students in applying to U.S. colleges and universities.
One of the recommendations is on WyzAnt.com.
I work extremely well when meeting deadlines.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking: We write, edit and video you for youtube.com or any public forum!
It's fun and rewarding!
I have coached many children, teachers, and adults in sales and marketing to speak effectively. I have also taught public speaking as an Adjunct Professor at schools and colleges in South Florida, such as Broward Community College and Lynn University.

So much depends upon reading comprehension. As a teacher in this area, I focus attention on the basics such as locating topic sentences and main ideas. Whether it's a simple story or a detailed subject composition, students learn to remember what is read. Important details are written. We will also perfect PowerPoint presentations!

Special Needs

Compassion and patience are the most important characteristics of anyone working with special needs students. As a substitute teacher for twenty years (1982-2003), I was placed in many classrooms for the handicapped. Bright Horizons is one of those special schools I was privileged to gain experience in. Sycamore High School was another. Indian Hill Middle School offered integrated classrooms for special needs students. I learned to look beyond the physical and focus on the spirit of a person, meeting that individual where he or she is.

Study Skills

Study skills are not subject-specific, however, when teaching English as a Second Language or how to pass the Toefl Test, I emphasize study skills. Study disciplines in our daily lives promote success.

Acting has been a part of my life since my teen years. At the University of Cincinnati I performed in several plays in the 1960's. I studied Theater, Voice, Broadcasting and Dance.
In 1964 I placed second in the Miss Cincinnati Contest. As an Adjunct Professor, I have taught Drama at Lynne University in Boca Raton, Florida. Also, I produced and directed a home-school play that was presented at a church.

As an ESOL teacher at the Florida Language School, I have taught foreign students to prepare for the TOEFL Exam. I have helped many students achieve their test-taking goals. The focus is on vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Vocabulary enrichment is an area I love to teach! We all need to take exams and to communicate well in business. Whatever your goal, I know that my 20 years of experience in teaching gives me the tools to perfect your language skills. I have taught in community colleges, language school and privately. We will accomplish your goal!

Whether you're writing a composition, a research paper or an essay, my twenty-plus years of experience will give a student what he needs to achieve a better grade or score higher on an achievement test. Young students will learn how to write complete sentences. Older students will learn how to write term papers that adhere to all the grammatical rules.
