Bethune Cookman University (Music Education K-12)
Hello! My name is Benjamin M. and I am a graduating senior at Bethune Cookman University. As of June 1st, 2015, I am a state certified teacher and I am ESOL endorsed. Teaching music is my passion and I love to see people succeed in the craft. I have tutored for the last 6 years in playing trumpet, piano and other instruments. Tutoring people, be it kids, teenagers or adults, is a great way for me to share my knowledge with others and watch them succeed. If you want to learn how to play any wind instrument or the piano, I can definitely lead you in the right direction. My teaching methods are mostly tactile and teaching students to become independent and evemtually want to learn on their own. Even if you just want to learn how to sight sing or even arrange music, I can assist you in doing so. I'm looking forward to meeting anyone willing to learn!
I am qualified to teach theory, sight singing, basic piano skills, and any wind instrument (Flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Tuba).
If you are interested, please feel free to contact me. Students can either travel to Bethune Cookman's campus to hold lessons in one of the practice rooms located in the music building (best choice for those who don't have their own instrument but at least have a mouthpiece), come to my apartment (provided you have your own instrument), or I can come to you. Contact me to discuss scheduling and I will be as flexible as possible.
I am also able to tutor in elementary math, spelling and vocabulary. Hello! My name is Benjamin M. and I am a graduating senior at Bethune Cookman University. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a music education major, therefore I have been developing my ear on piano. Whenever I am doing a harmonic analysis on a piece, I use the piano to play the chord progressions and identify the melody. I can teach the basics of pianos, including proper fingering for playing scales, learning arpeggios and reading basic piano music.
My sight singing are great and are only getting better. I am very familiar with the solfege syllables and hand symbols. Sight singing is something I practice constantly to help develop my ear and I can help someone else do the same. When I teach sight singing, I usually start by teaching basic solfege. Once solfege is learned, we sing along to the piano and then sight read a couple of musical phrases, using solfege. I have tutored underclassmen at my university in sight singing as well for the past two years.
I have been playing trumpet for the last 10 years of my life. I currently play in Bethune Cookman University's marching band and wind symphony as 2nd chair. I was trumpet section leader in high school for 3 years and tutored trumpet all 4 years in high school. I can play on multiple styles of trumpets, including Bb trumpet, Eb trumpet, piccolo trumpet and C trumpet.
I took a semester of applied violin this past semester. Although I don't have years of experience on violin, I can teach the foundation of the instrument, including string names, finger placements, scales and sight reading of easy pieces, just to get the student started.
