My love of learning has lead me to become a teacher and a tutor. I want to help students who are having a problem with English/Language Arts achieve their goals. I also want to help those who may need help passing the ACT, the SAT, the SAT writing portion, and other writing and reading requirements. I want to help students do so in an organized and systematic way. Coming from a poor family, I was taught very early that education is the key to success. I am living proof this belief is the truth. I know learning is hard work, but you only get out of education what you are willing to put into it. I worked my way through college and it has paid off in the students I have helped to achieve their dreams.
My twelve years of experience working in high school and middle school with students have given me the skills necessary to help students learn to write better and to gain greater understanding from what they read. I have learned and am still learning strategies that enhance my students' learning experience. I firmly believe that learning to read and write is like riding a bicycle. The more you do it; the better at it you will become. It is through reading more and using strategies to help you comprehend what you are reading that you become a better reader. It also is through writing more and learning to revise and edit your writing that you become a better writer.
I set high expectations for all of my students. I work with them and along aide of them to help them learn what they will need to go on to further their education and to get that first job. I put in long hours putting together lessons to meet the needs of my students. I tailor each lesson to what the student requires to move to the next level. I do not give up on students who are having a difficult time grasping a concept. I find unique ways to reach each and every student.
I have been published in the Who's Who of Teachers three times over the past 12 years. These publishings are based upon recommendations from students. I have received numerous letters from past students who write to thank me for the work I did with them to help them get where they are today. I work hard and I expect my students to work equally as hard. Because of the time I put into setting up lessons and traveling, I require a two hour notification if a session must be cancelled. I am always willing to re-schedule a lesson so that the student will get the most out his or her learning experience. I very rarely if every cancel a session. I also give periodic assessments and frequent reports on progress.
I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your goals in reading, writing, vocabulary building, and any other area of English/Language Arts. I hope to hear from you and to work with you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
