About Liz

All knowledge is connected to all other knowledge. The fun is in making the connections.” - Arthur Aufderheide

My academic background includes a bachelor's and master's degree in counseling psychology and doctoral work in psychological research. I have worked as a graduate fellow, instructing undergraduate university students. As an educator and psychological professional, I inherently posses the ability and sensitivity to assess an individual's strengths and weaknesses in the learning process, helping them to make the proper connections and achieve that "light bulb moment".

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

As a practicing therapist and LD teacher of over 15 years, I have experience working with children and adults with Asperger’s disorder, or autism spectrum disorder as specified in the DSM. Although these individuals are challenged in cognitive and language development, they do exhibit the ability to learn quite effectively through visual cues. Abstractions present problems in reading comprehension so it is important to present concrete, tangible materials in the learning process. I have been very successful engaging these individuals, helping them exercise specific routines and rituals which bolster a stable learning environment.

Autism

As a master's level therapist and PhD candidate working for various agencies, institutions and private practice over the years, I have extensive experience working with and teaching special needs to include autistic spectrum disorders. I provided outpatient services specifically utilizing ABA or Pivotal Response Therapy in play with young children. In the recent past I worked long-term with an Asperger's young adult who was engaged through this site which culminated in greatly improved outcomes.

English

I can certainly help you with your English language skills, verbal and written. I am an expert in understanding the structure of the English language; classes of words (parts of speech), meanings of words (semantics), how words are organised in relation to each other (syntax), how words are formed (morphology), the sounds of words (phonology) and how written forms represent these (lexicography).

Psychology

I hold a masters in Counseling Psychology and have completed all doctoral coursework toward a PhD in Psychology. I have instructed counseling psychology students at the university level and have extensive experience working as a psychotherapist over the past 15 years in various settings. Psychotherapeutic interventions include psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, psychological testing, individual/group therapy, and medication management.

Sociology

My academic background includes a bachelor's and master's degree in counseling psychology and doctoral work in psychological research. I have worked as a graduate fellow, instructing and assessing undergraduate university students in social psychology, psychology and research and statistics courses. As a psychological professional, I have extensive academic training and experience working in the social sciences, both in the natural environment and research applications.

Social Psychology is not entirely distinctive in its history of research methodology from other psychological disciplines. The birth of social psychology as in the consensus of its founder, Norman Triplett (1897-1898) was credited with such due to his use of the scientific method in a controlled environment (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2009). Social environments certainly present a unique challenge in maintaining controls across variables. However, changes in trends and methods of research in social psychology are not surprisingly incremental with historical, current and impending sociological events. Since social psychology focuses on the ways in which individuals think, feel, behave and interact, it is integrated with most all psychological disciplines to include specializations in personality, cognition, clinical, and human development (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2009).

Statistics

I have successfully completed academic training in inferential statistics and advanced inferential statistical analysis on the PhD level and have conducted a variety of quantitative and qualitative research projects.

Study Skills

My academic background includes a Bachelors and Master's in Counseling Psychology. I have completed five years of doctoral work toward my PhD in psychological research. I have worked as a graduate fellow, instructing undergraduate university students and have extensive experience working as a psychological professional over the past 15 years in a variety of settings. I possess excellent study skills, and I clearly understand the motivating factors associated with academic progress and success. As an educator and counseling professional, I inherently posses the ability and sensitivity to assess an individual's needs, strengths and weaknesses, and help guide and motivate them to achieve personal and academic goals.

Writing

I am an accomplished published writer, highly skilled in scholarly writing for peer review. I can also help you with proper formatting such as APA, AMA or MLA to meet academic requirements.

I also am a talented creative writer, and am able to help provide guidelines in composition in order for your creative thoughts to flow succinctly on paper.

An excellent and knowledgeable tutor! — I started working with Liz for help in getting prepared for the writing and verbal sections of the GREs. She has been a huge help and I have made leaps and bounds in both sections, particularly in the writing which was a very weak area for me in the beginning. Liz is also very good at helping establish effective and systematic study routines that are easy to follow and very thorough. I would highl ...
