University of Tampa (Master's)
I taught in the Pasco County School System as a teacher for ninth grade students who had flunked the FCAT in reading in a brand new school while finishing my Masters in Teaching. My certification area is Math grades 5-9. I had to take the Professional exam in addition to passing the exam for my certification. I am considered "highly qualified" under the No Child Left Behind Act and my portfolio is on record with the Florida Department of Education. I also was a substitute teacher at a prep school for Honors geometry classes as well as a substitute teacher for Honors Chemistry at a public high school, all while going through the Masters program (earning a 3.91 GPA). The Masters program was the first of its kinds and I was hand picked at the University of Tampa, which is a private university. During our Masters program, I was sent to Houston for a teacher's workshop that was being put on by the U.S. Department of Education and NASA, all paid expenses. I was in a gifted program as a child and two out of my four children were also in gifted programs. I work very well with children and have helped my grandchildren of 9 and 10 with their math; my 9-year old grandson is very gifted and has a unique and nontraditional way of coming to his answers while my 10-year old granddaughter has struggled until she finally was able to receive a B. I understand the struggles and difficulties that young children go through when it comes to Math because I understand the cognitive issues that are happening and I am able to work them through their issues. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
