Florida State University (Biology)
Graduated from Florida State University in 1986 with a Bachelor's of Science. I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry. In twenty years I have taught and tutored individuals and groups of students throughout the state of Florida in three different school districts. Most of my tutoring experience is in math based subjects such as Algebra and Finite Math. I have also tutored students in Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Basic Computer Skills and Test preparation for the ACT or SAT.
My methods vary based on the student's ability in the current area of need. There are times we begin math and science concepts by going into basic study habits and organizational skills if the student needs a foundation in organizing and processing information. Often at the first tutoring session, I will assess the students current knowledge and need "fit" for my services and have extended a refund of the first session fee if I determine the student would be better suited by finding help from other sources including other tutors. At the first session we will also establish a timetable and deadlines to reach our goals. If a student is not meeting our goals and expectations other ways to assist the student's academic need will be explored. While tutoring can not be a guarantee to success, my methods determine if one-on-one tutoring is beneficial to each student. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
