University of West Florida (Anthropology)
Hi! I'm Kate, and I am a Biological Anthropologist from the University of West Florida. Biological Anthropology is the study of how biology can have an effect on culture. I also have about eight years of professional experience working as an archaeologist. Between school and work I've acquired a great deal of knowledge on topics ranging from biology, archaeology, anthropology, and history. I have a real passion for these subjects, and I would love to be able to pass that on to anyone that needs help understanding them. In addition to that, I am a freelance writer on the side. I mostly write for websites, and I have sold a good number of articles, so I am able to tutor writing and grammar.
I have tutored history and biology in the past, and the students I worked with went on to receive high grades in those subject. I have also worked with the education department at the Brevard County Natural History Museum in Florida creating lesson plans for grade school students coming to the museum on field trips. I used archaeology as a creative tool to teach math, science, history, and critical thinking skills. My teaching philosophy is that learning should be fun. I don't want to simply help students improve grades, I want to help them learn to take a genuine interest in the subjects they are studying. I know through experience that I can do that successfully. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned a degree from The University of West Florida in Anthropology, with a concentration in Biological Anthropology. During my time in school I studied all the branches of anthropology, and graduated with a high GPA. I have tutored this subject before, and the student I tutored improved two letter grades in the time I was helping him. In addition to that, I have also worked professionally as an archaeologist (one of the major branches of anthropology) for many years. I love my field, and I love to sharing my knowledge of it with others.
Sewing has been a hobby of mine for many years, since I was first taught to sew by my mother. In school I took a few sewing classes, but it was after college that I started to really study the art. I have made a large part of my own wardrobe, I have taught others to make clothes and simple project of their own, and I am also a costume maker for some of the local community theaters. Most recently I worked as the seamstress for productions with the McLean Community Players. I can teach hand and machine sewing, how to use patterns, and how to tailor clothes to fit.
