I am a certified teacher that has taught students at all levels from 1st Grade through adults. I have worked with ESOL and VE students, mainstream students, and regular ed pupils. I was the educator at a female prison implementing a pilot program established by Gov. Jeb Bush to seriously decrease repeat incarcerations by preparing the women for life on the outside. Of the eighteen women who prepared for the GED, sixteen passed on their first try, and the other two missed by a few points in a single subject, and obtained their GED on their second try.
I was an assistant to author Valerie Ellery (and also an acknowledged contributor) in her book "Creating Strategic Readers". "Creating Strategic Readers", an International Reading Association President's Club selection, has been presented to teachers throughout the United States and in several foreign locations.
I would like to help you or your student achieve personal growth and self pride in the learning process. Most classroom curriculum moves at a rapid rate. Not every student can adjust as quickly and therefore tends to fall behind. I believe the whole purpose in utilizing a tutor is for me to ensure that you completely understand a concept, and can adequately explain it prior to moving forward. Most subjects build upon the foundation of your previous knowledge - if there are "cracks" or "missing bricks" in the foundation then it must be repaired and strengthened for you to succeed. We pulled our daughter out of school and made her a homebound student. Terry helped Athena in these subjects Freshman English, US History, Algebra 1, Business tech (computer), Freshman biology, and Art. She could not help with German. We could not do PE homebound. Our daughter ended up getting all of her credits for the year because of Terry's help. She has continued to assess her for ACT, and help her with concepts that she is not grasping. She has a way of taking things up to a high level, give the big picture and bring it down to the details of the problem or project at hand. We have started using Terry's services for a second daughter who is struggling to pass her GED. She has helped us immensely.
Ms. Terry tutored my daughter for 4 years (2nd grade-5th grade). As schools plunged in computerized curriculum my child just could not keep up. Her math and reading comprehension grades were very poor and her self confidence at school was so low. This is when we found Ms. Terry on WyzAnt and asked for her help.
Ms. Terry is great. She can explain math the way it is explained at school, but she will also brake it down so it is easy for my child to keep up. Ms. Terry was always so patient and it helped my daughter to focus on the subject and ask questions. We would meet during school year and through summer. Worked mostly on reading comprehension during summer and on math, reading and social studies during the school months. Over time my child gained skills and confidence, and acquired excellent work habits.
Ms. Terry is an outstanding teacher. We cannot thank her enough for her help.
My daughter used Ms. Terry about 2 years ago, and she absolutely loved her. My daughter is now in the 11th grade and needs some help with High School Algebra. I knew where to find a tutor since I had used WyzAnt for my daughter and my son. My daughter insisted that I try to find Ms. Terry because she love her teaching style. My daughter's words were, "I want Ms. Terry because she can explain it and break it down until I understand it". I went on a hunt to find Ms Terry. I was so relieved when Miss Terry answered my email. Ms. Terry is absolutely AWESOME!!! Thanks, Ms. Terry!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Although I enjoy teaching most subjects, American History is my absolute favorite. By learning more than just dates and names you allow yourself to far better understand how this nation was formed, what ideals from the late 1700's (and even before) make the United States such a superior country, and what is still strongly applicable today. American History is so much more than a series of wars, and is fascinating when you begin to sink your teeth into it.
Not only have I personally taken the ASVAB, but I have assisted several people in successfully passing this battery of tests to achieve the jobs they were seeking.
I have taught 1st - 3rd grade and am a professional educator certified to teach all core curriculum for 5th-9th grade students. I am willing to go the extra mile to ensure that your student is receiving bona fide tutorial instruction. No one is an authority on every facet of each of the four core subjects. I am no different, but I promise to determine specifically what topics your child is struggling with, and I will do the background research to ensure that I know what I am teaching to your student. If I am unsure, I WILL say so, and will find sources to use as supplements to be positive that I am providing your student with valid and reliable information.
I have experience teaching 1st-3rd grade students in the area of reading. Learning to read is a compilation of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As an author assistant, I helped design a variety of techniques for teaching each of these five components of literacy in "Creating Strategic Readers" written by author Valerie Ellery.
As a certified teacher, I have spent many hours teaching students ways to improve their study skills, increase their proficiency and improve their grades in certain subjects. Finding the unique key to allow students to better focus on material leads to an increased interest and comprehension of the subject matter and learning in general. I believe that developing good study skills is a practiced art.
