About Rich

After 20 years of teaching, I moved to Florida to be closer to family. Of course, I didn't start out teaching. I was a Private Investigator, a store clerk, and a substitute teacher. While subbing , I found a mentor, or, I should say, she found me. When she told me I had the potential to be a Master Teacher, I found that I could not refuse the challenge. Rather humorously, I received my Master's Degree in Elementary Education before I finished my classes for my teaching certificate. In 2004, I became a National Board Certified Teacher.
My first five years of teaching were spent in the Roosevelt School District, in Phoenix, AZ, teaching Art. After that, I moved on to the Washington Elementary School District (also in Phoenix), to teach Social Studies. After 14 years there, I retired.
During my time at Palo Verde Middle School, I taught Social Studies, US and World History, Government, and Science. My students competed in Science Fairs, and State-wide Competitions and Showcases for We The People: The Citizen and The Constitution and We The People: Project Citizen. While preparing for these competitions, my students developed their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. They learned to work cooperatively, and to accomplish their goals.
I also worked extensively with our Special Education Department. I was instrumental in integrating special needs students into my social studies classroom. I team-taught with a teacher whose caseload consisted of MIMR students, Emotionally and Physically Disabled students, students with behavioral disorders, and ADD/ADHD students.
From 2013-2015, I taught High School Equivalency classes to adults at Rio Salado College.
In both the Middle School and Adult Education settings, I have embraced the Common Core Curricula.
Teaching has been my passion for 20 years. As I continue to learn, so I continue to teach. I love learning and I love sharing what I learn. I am a news hound and a political wag, with an almost obsessive interest in the Constitution and the law. I am an avid reader and writer. I enjoy watching classic movies. I like to fish.
I am happy to tutor students from Elementary to Adult, in the setting of your choice.

I engage my students with real life applications of the material they study. I utilize an integrated thematic approach to each topic. Students learn based on their particular style of learning, and choose how they wish to show mastery of the subject (written reports, art work, computer-based applications, etc.)

Why do YOU need a tutor? You don't understand the subject? Don't understand the teacher? Not being taught the way you learn? Trouble showing what you know? Afraid of speaking in front of the class? Need to prepare for a test? Need to sharpen your skills, or improve your grades? I can help.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

During my 14 years at Palo Verde Middle School, in Phoenix, Arizona, I taught middle school Social Studies, including US and World History, Geography, Economics, and Civics. Many of my students participated in We The People programs, including The Citizen and the Constitution, and Project Citizen, Sponsored by the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and the Center for Civic Education.
I specialize in US History, from the Causes of the Civil War, to the Causes of WWII. I am a History buff and a political junkie.

College Counseling

As an Adult Education Instructor, one of my duties was to counsel students regarding future college classes. After passing the GED, my students would often need help deciding what to do with their diplomas. Many times, with a goal in mind, students would require direction regarding the next steps to achieve that goal. Many were recommended to programs available in our school, others were directed to other institutions.

Common Core

I have received training in, and utilized, Common Core, for the last 5 years of my teaching experience, in Middle School.
I have also received training in, and utilized, Common Core in my Adult Education experience.
I have mentored student teachers in the use of a Common Core curriculum.

Criminal Justice

My Major field of undergraduate studies was Sociology, with a major in Criminal Justice, from Wagner College, Staten Island, NY.
I served an Internship with the New York City Police Department, during my senior year at Wagner.
I have 15 years' experience as a Private Investigator.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold an Elementary (K-8) teaching certificate from Arizona. I have held this certificate since 1999. The certificate also verifies my SEI and Social Studies endorsements. This certificate is valid until 2017. My application for a Florida Teaching Certificate is on file with the Florida Department of Education.

GED

I taught GED classes for two years, at Rio Salado College, in Phoenix, Arizona. I am well versed in Language Arts and Social Studies, as well as MYGED and other online prep sites. The five paragraph essay is my specialty.

Government & Politics

I have taught Government and Politics through the We The People Programs, sponsored by the Center for Civic Education, Programs include: We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution, and We The People, Project Citizen. These programs deal with the structure of government, rights and responsibilities of citizens, and individual involvement in the political system.

Public Speaking

I have engaged students in speaking competitions, including: We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution, where students study a Constitutional question and deliver speeches based on their findings.
I have also mentored students in their studies of We The People: Project Citizen, where students research a problem; from what is served in the cafeteria, to Illegal Wiretapping; and determine a solution to that problem, delivering their findings to an audience and judges.
Finally, I have always instructed my students in the ways of debate, using debate as a tool to shows both sides of an argument.

Reading

I have taught Reading through History, and History through Reading, for over fourteen years. I have helped students improve their grades and prepare for tests, including the GED.
I enjoy reading, and love to share that enjoyment with my students.

Social Studies

I received my Bachelor's Degree, from Wagner College, in Sociology. I have taught Social Studies for 14 years, in the Washington Elementary School District.
I received my National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Social Studies/History.

Study Skills

Study skills are an important part of student success. As a veteran teacher, I know that students need to learn how to study. They need a quiet place to study. They need to be focused, and organized. And they need guidance.
While teaching Middle School, I spent many a morning and afternoon, both before and after school, teaching students HOW to organize their time and space to study.

Writing

I have taught writing a part of my middle school classes, for over fourteen years. My students were required to write short papers (2-3 pages) and use the MLA style of citation.
While teaching adults, in High School Equivalency classes, I introduced the APA style, and required them to use it in all of their writing assignments.
