About James

Hello and thank you for considering my tutoring services. I'm currently a graduate student, studying for my Master's in History, concentrating in American History, at Southern New Hampshire University via their online program. I attended St. Petersburg College from 2009-2013, where a graduated with an Associate's in Humanities and a Bachelor's of Science in Public Administration and Policy. I have a passion for history, something my time in grad school has only accentuated. It is my life's goal to be able to share this passion for the saga of the human story and its importance to us now though being an educator.

I'm a Navy veteran who has traveled throughout East Asia and Pacific, but will always call the mountains of my birth state Georgia home, despite having spent much of my life in Florida. From my time in the service I learned the art hearing people out and working to their strengths for the greater mission, it's something I try to relate in teaching. I want to find the way something relates to a student, and how it can become apart of a student's world or general knowledge to appreciate in larger context. My goal as your tutor will be to listen to your needs and make them a reality as best I can, I view this as a team effort and together we can make your educational desires a reality. If you're interested in my services, or would just like to talk about how I could assist you in your educational goals, I would be happy to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a passion for history, that is paired with a passion to see students thrive in the historical topics they're struggling with. Beyond being a life long lover of all things history, I'm currently studying for my master's in history with a concentration in American history; I will be completing my courses this summer and have my degree conferred in the fall. The history of the United States is the improbable story of colonists taking on their imperial master, to not only create a democratic-republic but to create nation that would be a beacon of liberty and innovation for generations to follow. Areas of American history I specialize in are Civil War studies, American Indian removal, the Glided Age, Abolitionist Movement, and the Cold War era.

English

The English language has a unique and fascinating background, from the guttural tribal speak of the British Isles to a global language of business and diplomacy. In English, words can have multiple meanings and spellings, it's the fine but important difference between "their," "there," and "they're." One represents possession, belonging to someone (their), another is acts like the word here, representing a place (there), and the other is shorthand for they are (they're). Discovering the proper usage of words and their context can be both a useful and amazing skill, I look forward to helping you develop it in any I can.

European History

The content of Europe has contributed so much to the human saga; either domestically among its the many cities, nations, kingdoms, and empires of its preset or past, or internationally through journeys of trade, exploration, or conquest. In this journey I would like to be able to demonstrate how, despite the great ethnic diversity of the continent, a common continental identity has progressed over the millennia, and dates back to the expansion of the Roman Empire. Whatever period of European history you need help focusing in, it would be a pleasure to help find your voice in expressing the depth of the European part of the human saga that is history. I would add as an addendum, that I specialize in early to mid twentieth century German history and the period of the Glorious Revolution in England.

Geography

During my time in the Navy I got the chance to travel the Pacific ocean, I saw much of East Asia and also experienced the beauty of Australia, Russia, and our fiftieth state Hawaii. It only enhanced my long existing wanderlust and love for learning about new cultures, and that in a nutshell is what geography is all about. Learning about the multitude of nationalities and ethnicities that we share this planet with, and exchanging our human experience. While simple tutoring is no substitute for the experience of global travel, my goal will be to help my students build a well rounded knowledge of national and domestic borders, as well as an interest in the cultural and ethnic traditions.

Reading

Reading is one of the great, yet necessary, skills in life. It opens the world of literature, philosophy, and so much more, but it is also needed in our day to day lives. From reading a newspaper or magazine, to understanding the context and concepts being articulated. An important aspect of reading, is not just knowing the basics of how to read but being able to apply those to something that truly grabs your imagination. No matter what it is, from classics to comic books, if the reader can become engaged by the subject matter, than reading skills can be honed to an advanced level. It is my goal to find what captivates the student, and use that to overcome the difficulty they're having, and as Jefferson would say, "light a fire in their mind..".

World History

World history is the fascinating comparative, transnational study of the human saga, one that I particularly love studying during the age of Atlantic exploration. In studying this field, the important aspect I would like to imprint on a student, is how nations or whole regions of the globe have become interlocked and created decade or century long periods of conflict and alliance. The lenses through which these periods can be viewed, are multiple and equally valid in helping us to understand movements and motivations. I look forward to hearing from you, and being able to help in any way can with your aims in studying world history.
