Reading and Language Arts Teacher
My name is Kristen and I work as a Reading and Language Arts teacher for 6th and 7th graders. I am entering my 10th year of teaching. While I teach middle school currently, I started out teaching elementary school. Overall, I have experience teaching 1st grade, 4th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade. During my elementary experience I learned that I had a passion for learning about the intricate nature of the way a person learns to read. This interest led me to pursue a Master's degree...
This interest led me to pursue a Master's degree and, currently, a Doctorate in Reading Education. I completed my undergraduate work at Roger Williams University, where I majored in both Writing and Elementary Education.
When I am not teaching and tutoring, I am a mother to 4 children, ages 17, 15, 10, and 2. I understand that not all students learn the same, but all students can learn because despite the fact that their mother is a teacher, some of my own kids struggle. My experience with tutoring comes from helping them, as well as spending extra time at work with the students I teach. I understand test anxiety. I am a bad test taker, but my philosophy is that "if we teach our students to be good readers and writers, they will be able to pass any test." Sometimes, by no fault of their own, or their teacher, students just miss concepts or need additional time. I think the key to education is meeting the student where they are, and helping them move to where they need to be.
I am originally from New England. When I am not teaching, tutoring, or attending full time school myself, I enjoy reading for fun and journaling. I like to be outdoors, travel, and spend time with family. I have 2 pets a dog and a cat. I enjoy meeting new students and parents and I look forward to tutoring!
I majored in writing in college and have loved to write from a young age. When I began teaching, I strengthened my skills in teaching writing to prepare my students for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). My students consistently passed the test and my classes had some of the best scores in our school. I proofread professional writing for friends, colleagues, and family members as I have a reputation of writing well. I developed public speaking skills by serving on the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Board at schools where I teach. I am not afraid to speak in front of a crowd. I am fiercely passionate about reading and learning to read. I am currently pursuing a doctorate degree in this area. My most recent test scores reflect that 47% of my remedial students tested well enough on state tests after 1 year with me to be placed in regular classes. These students have also sought help from me for tutoring because I instruct in a way that they are comfortable and understand.
For Students - I am not here to judge or assign grades. I'm here to help. I will be honest in my feedback and always try to help you succeed in everything you do. I share in your accomplishments and I will be there when you fall to help you up and try again.
For parents - I understand test anxiety; Individual Education Plans; 504 Plans; and students to whom school just doesn't come easily. Any student can learn. It is important that we work together to build trust and partnership.
