As an undergraduate at Smith College, I majored in Psychology, minored in Philosophy, and took many courses is English Literature. These are all subjects at which I excel, and served as a starting point for my expertise in areas of literary analysis, critical thinking and writing. Later, I earned a Masters of Arts in Education, specializing in School Counseling, and was certified as a school counselor for Kindergarten through 12th grade for many years. I spent 21 years as a school counselor at the secondary level, in both private and public schools.
My Master's thesis, "Motivation and Learning: From Theory to Practice," included a detailed plan for a High School Transition Program, which I later implemented and ran for 10 years. This included a Study Skills Course that I taught myself, including topics such as reading strategies such as SQ3R, note-taking strategies, writing techniques, test-taking strategies, mnemonics, metacognitive skills, organization, time management, self-assessment and self-advocacy. I also developed an after school tutoring program. In addition to training peer tutors, I tutored students myself, 4 days a week for 10 school years.
My post graduate professional development has included attending seminars on brain development, ADHD instruction, and workshops held by the College Board and American College Testing. Because of my work as a counselor, I am knowledgeable about a variety of learning styles, and with school plans such as Individualized Education Plans. I also understand the college admission process, and regularly read scholarly articles in this field.
During my 21 years working in schools, I taught Health classes for more than 10 years, co-taught English 9, and taught Independent Study courses in Pre-Algebra, British Literature and Philosophy. I held workshops for students on SAT preparation and writing a college admissions essay. Finally, I taught a variety of seminars for Masters' level students in Education.
I left school counseling to found my own company as an educational consultant. The services I offer include study skills and organization, writing skills development, transition to high school, career exploration, college search, SAT and ACT Preparation, transition to college, and subject specific tutoring. The subjects I tutor are included below.
For grades 5-8 I have tutored: Language Arts (including spelling and grammar), Connected Math, Pre-Algebra and Algebra.
For grades 9-12 I have tutored: English Literature, Writing, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, SAT Preparation (I am ready for the new SAT), ACT Preparation, SSAT Preparation and College Essay Writing.
At the college level, I have served as an Academic Coach for students from 6 different colleges. I have worked with these students on exam preparation and paper writing (brainstorming, writing, editing and proofreading papers). I have given exam preparation and paper support to students in all years of college, and in many disciplines.
Over my ten years in business, I worked with more than 100 students and logged approximately 5,000 tutoring hours. Those hours included both in-person and online tutoring. In addition, I have developed and implemented Home School plans for students at the high school level. Subjects include English, World History and United States History.
As a part of my professional work, I research and compile learning strategies, so that I have a tremendous wealth of information at my disposal. When I tutor, I make individual study plans with each student, emphasizing skill development and reinforcement with repetition and active learning strategies. I am well-versed in executive functioning and am able to help students use such skills to their advantage. I am friendly and patient, and have a genuine love for learning!

Knowledgeable and Patient - Great Listener
Linda was very helpful and insightful as it related to this tutoring session. Given the special circumstances, she was able to break things down in a methodical/pragmatic way helping me to better understand the writing process as a whole (everything from structure to comprehension).
