I discovered my gift for teaching as a private swimming instructor in High School. Now with a Masters Degree and 25 years as a classroom teacher I know the value of learning to read. I am able to connect well with students and parents and firmly believe communication between parent, student and tutor are key to success!
I have extensive experience with common core, grade level expectations and strategies with ESL, speech and language disorder students.
I've been fortunate to guide many students to discover their ability to learn to read. I'll never tire of seeing the young reader gain the confidence to read and truly enjoy the world of words!
I look forward to meeting you and help your child achieve success.
As a teacher in a school implementing "Reading First Program" I completed numerous workshops to learn rubric assessments for writing and reading comprehension. Additionally, as a teacher in ( Miami, FL) I was among the first schools to conduct" Florida Writes" as part of standard testing. 40% of my class scored 4.0. I taught an alternative 4th grade class bringing standardized test scores up to average and above average thus able to promote all students to regular mainstream classrooms.
I am familiar with various methods of handwriting. I am able to create meaningful activities to help the child learn to write the mechanics of the letters and to connect the letters making words and the understanding that letters represent sounds and sounds blend into words. Sound spelling, memorization games are positive learning activities familiar to my teaching.
I am skilled and knowledgeable in many phonics programs. They all have their value and if instructed in a fun and positive way the student masters the sounds. I have the experience and ability to teach the next steps, the blending of the sounds and sounding them out to form the words to begin the reading process. There are several reading strategies that work along with phonics to develop the reading process.
I have always been passionate about helping children learn to read! I would like to meet you and your child in person to plan a schedule to begin tutoring. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
