About Edgar

I hold a Bachelor's in Arts from the University of Central Florida in Philosophy and am presently in my last trimester of a Master's in Arts in Theology. My passion is teaching. I have tutored people in French and English as a Second Language. I have taught 5th, 6th, and 8th graders in ESL, Science, and Social Studies. My latest teaching experience has been more technical teaching young adults and adults CPR/AED, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, Emergency Oxygen Administration, and Child and Babysitting Safety. I am currently licensed to teach either one of these subject by the American Safety & Health Institute.

I feel it is extremely important to allow the students to be the ones that do most of the work, talking, and interacting. Even though we as teachers also learn in the process, they are the most important persons in the classroom. I will be bringing all my experience, patience, dedication, and enthusiasm, as well as all the materials and skills I have compiled and collected to apply the right methodology to the various types of intelligences, I might have in my classroom and make the experience enjoyable and effective for everyone one.

Techniques that I feel are critical, also based on the type of student, would be the use of dialogues, questions/answers, conversations, group discussions, games, music, art, drills, drama/skits, guest speakers, and field trips, etc. The experience of learning needs to keep both the student and the teacher engaged, and for this needs to be fluid, varied, and applicable.

Finally, I have been a volunteer with the American Red Cross for many years as a Disaster Relief Volunteer, knowledge and skills which I am happy to announce, have helped me become a better-rounded individual.

Let’s embark in this journey of exchange and growth together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

The Master’s in Religion I am currently pursuing has qualified me to teach courses like History of Christian Thought, New Testament, Hebrew Bible, Contemporary Cultures & Theologies, and Christian Theology. My personal faith has provided me with the necessary background and experience to foster and promote my own religious tradition and beliefs, but always with outmost respect for traditions and beliefs of others. I believe in interfaith communication and feel the culturally pluralistic world requires that people from all cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and faith traditions come together to work as one body in the midst of a world that tends more to divide than to reunite.

The curriculum I was instructed on emphasizes and promotes the student to learn from each other, but to be able to come up with their own unique and personal understanding and application of the material being taught. Techniques like reading and discussion in order to come to a better understanding of the material being read and how it could be applied to current ministry is critical. Given the contextual nature of theology, my approach will be to provide critical background needed to develop a constructive theological and religious position and some sort of a vision for future mission parameters. My only hope is that our journey together will bear fruits in a world filled so much diversity and the need for well grounded ministers.

General Music

I have been playing piano since I was 16 years old and was taught and trained in reading music and playing by Alba Rosa Castro who was a famous and very well known piano player in my country many years ago.

I have kept with piano since then and tend to be more inclined to playing the classical pieces and ethnic music from my country Puerto Rico, than any other genre.

Recently, I have been playing for my church hymn and some contemporary Christian music as well.

Music is a passion for me and at the same time my escape into a world filled with beauty, passion, and emotion.

Piano

I have playing piano since I was 16 years of age. I can sight read, teach general music. I was taught with the Thompson Piano Lesson series and that is what I have been using to teach my family. I am a substitute player at my church when there is need to fill in or someone calls in sick or on vacation.

Russian

I started to learn Russian during my second college year in Puerto Rico where I was instructed in Basic through Intermediate Russian by then ad honorem Prof. Segundo Cardona Bosques in 1984.

In 1986 I served with the US Army as a Russian Voice Interceptor trained at the state of the art Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, California in Russian language. I am proficient enough to read, speak, and write the Russian language at an intermediate to advance level. I am very familiar with the basic grammar to be able to have a solid grasp of the language.

Davaitie ushitz ruski iazik fmiestie!

Voice (Music)

I have been training my voice as a Baritone for many years. I am currently the main singer at my church and have directed and performed as a church singer for many years. My background in music reading and piano has supported my singing and performing. I also was a tenor/baritone performer in Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rican Symphonic choir.
