I am currently an 11th/12th grade reading teacher with a high success rate with the FCAT and Reading ACT. I have taught reading to various other grade levels as well, including elementary and middle school. I am also a PLC facilitator for my department and often times direct other teachers with coursework that will increase their student's success rate on standardized tests. Currently, my students are responsible to pass the FCAT, but I teach using Common Core (Aligned to the FSA standardized test ) and I am trained with the new FSA assessment requirements. I hold an Elementary Education Degree that has a reading and ESOL endorsement fused into it through the state of Florida.
My philosophy in a classroom is to build rapport with the student, and learning will naturally occur as a result. I encourage my students to think outside the box and to take risks to expand their knowledge. On a more personal note I am an avid writer/reader in my spare time, which helps me to find resources that will encourage my students to take those risks using materials that are more to their liking. I encourage a student's strengths through positive reinforcement, and believe that is the key to success for students and adults alike. Tammy has been fantastic helping my son prepare for ACT and SAT. He had very little time to prepare and she really has taken the time to assist him in being prepared and confident enough to take the tests.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a current teacher of 11th & 12th grade intensive reading students. I also do a push-in service to various other content areas. At the beginning and throughout the year, I teach students how to become organized within their subjects to start with, and then I teach them how to set up to study (to start reading each and every time you study in a different location, studying in increments of 20 minutes, creating index cards, and various other techniques based on the student's individual needs).
