Muhlenberg College (Neuroscience)
In every job I've had, I've taken on the role of an educator: from training new employees and educating consumers, to my current employment as a high school teacher. Helping someone to learn and understand something is my passion, as is my own quest for life-long learning. I have recently accrued hundreds of hours of professional development courses to increase my knowledge on teaching methods, with a focus on struggling students.
I also have experience working with students enrolled in online courses. If you are completing a course for credit recovery or for graduation requirements, I can be the "teacher in the room" to help you understand the material.
Biology and Algebra can be very difficult courses for students, especially students who are also transitioning to more rigorous high school course work. Since these courses are both graduation requirements, with an End of Course Exam, they are critical for your success in school! I can work with you to develop a customized set of sessions throughout the summer to help students to gain necessary background knowledge prior to enrolling in a course to ensure academic success throughout the course.
While my "first love" is biology, I have also taught many other science courses, both in the classroom and in private tutoring. Because science is linked with math, I am very comfortable tutoring math including Algebra and Geometry, and have the knowledge, materials, and strategies to help students prepare for high-stakes End-Of-Course Exams. Additionally, I have obtained my Reading Endorsement and understand that reading is embedded in all content areas and something that I am very passionate about teaching. There are many strategies that I would love to share that can help students to understand the course content, improve grades, and prepare for exams.
I offer after-school tutoring during the week and on weekends, as well as throughout the summer, and I can be flexible to accommodate your needs. I do require 24-hour notice on cancellations, but can offer make up sessions. Introductory sessions can take place in a local library or other public setting.
I look forward to hearing from you to begin our journey to greater success! In every job I've had, I've taken on the role of an educator: from training new employees and educating consumers, to my current employment as a high school teacher. We found Jessica late in the year, to help our son with Biology and Algebra. Our only regret is that we didn't find her earlier. She was prompt every time, and well prepared for his lessons every week. She is extremely knowledgeable in the subjects, and was very patient. Our son really liked her!! She was great, and in the short time this year we used her, our son's grades improved, and more importantly, he learned.
My daughter liked her lesson with Jessica. She is very detailed and easy going. After class she informed me in details what they did during the class and what will be the next step. So far we are satisfied with Jessica.
She was punctual and explained the material in a way that my daughter could comprehend it and Jessica also asked questions to "prod" her critical thinking and not merely regurgitate what she had learned. Patient and carefully planned the lesson so that it was geared to what my daughter specifically needed to learn. We look forward to more sessions with Jessica in the future!
Jessica is a great tutor. She is very kind and helps a lot. I’m glad I found her to help me with geometry.
Jessica C. is an excellent tutor. She has been very prepared and focused for introduction and subsequent tutoring session with both my children. Her skills are wide-ranging as is her grasp of subject matter. I highly recommend her.
Jessica, is extremely knowledgeable and patient. She makes the lessons enjoyable as well as productive. She helps with study tactics and alternative ways to the correct outcome.
Could not be happier with our choice. Jessica was not only an exceptional tutor she communicated with my son so well and kept him enthusiastic about his lessons.
Very flexible and reliable. She's been such an awesome tutor for my daughter. Taylor is made such an improvement in just a few lessons, it's amazing.
Thank you so much jessica
Jessica connects very well with my child, she's very knowledgeable, and my child feels very comfortable and understands her. I made a good choice choosing her.
She is very kind and friendly my son took to her with no problems. He was able to learn and pay attention with Jessicas activities. I would 100% recommend Jessica because she is very knowledgeable and understands what the child needs in order for her to help them.
Jessica relates well to both parent and student. My daughter struggles with Algebra and Jessica was able to find some problem areas within the first few minutes of talking with her. My daughter Is looking forward to working with her. YES!!!
She knows exactly how to help my son. He is having some problems with his reading. She knew what would help him right from the start. He really likes her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I believe Algebra can actually be fun and rewarding when a student masters the content, and many of my students would agree! Tutoring in Algebra can help to increase test scores (including chapter tests and the Florida Algebra 1 End of Course Exam), improve study skills, improve problem solving ability, and increase confidence.
I currently hold a Florida Educator's Professional Certificate for teaching Biology. I have been teaching and tutoring students in Biology for 7 years. I have many resources to help students understand the concepts in the course, as well as to improve study skills and test scores (including chapter tests and the Florida End of Course Exam).
I have previous experience tutoring elementary students in a variety of subjects, especially Reading. I am currently Reading Endorsed in Florida, for grade K-12. As a high school teacher, I have taught many students at all achievement levels, even as low as kindergarten, and have developed many resources to accomplish this. I have knowledge of resources available for objectives, state standards, and common core standards for elementary students as well.
I have taken 300 hours of coursework for my Florida educator's Reading Endorsement and, as part of this, I have demonstrated competencies in Phonics and Phonological Awareness.
Pre-algebra is such an important course since it forms the foundation of algebra. I have helped many students understand the concepts of pre-algebra so that they may later have a much better grasp of concepts in algebra, with specific emphasis on passing the Algebra End of Course exam (EOC). I have the experience and resources to help students gain confidence and be successful in math!
As a high school teacher, I frequently incorporate study skills into my lessons to assist students in preparing for tests and high stakes exams. I use CRISS strategies designed to help students transform the information and become active learners which deepens their comprehension and increases their success on exams.
With a teaching certificate in Biology, I am certified to teach Zoology courses. I have experience teaching and tutoring concepts in zoology as they relate to animal classifications and traits within the classifications. I also have access to many resources on Zoology to assist in learning and comprehension of topics within the course.
