Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As part of my doctoral studies, I worked with exceptional student education to teach reading and math to children with ADD/ADHD. They are very bright and enthusiastic learners; teachers must be especially creative. More importantly, teachers must be familiar with effective strategies and be able to communicate ideas that stick and do this within a short period of time. We researched and documented many of the most effective strategies that are used in schools today.

Algebra 1

Teaching algebra successfully requires first understanding the concepts yourself, then knowing what your student knows and understands. You can't just "put the formula out there" and expect learners to "just get it." Doing algebra requires a strategy of attack much like going at a crossword puzzle or playing monopoly.

Elementary (K-6th)

I homeschooled 3 children through elementary school with all 3 passing standardized tests above the 90th percentiles of their grade. I have my PhD in Teaching and Learning and taught preservice teachers in child development, mathematics, and assessment/evaluation of young children.

Linear Algebra

I have four years of graduate level statistics at Vanderbilt University.

Public Speaking

I worked as the Family Cafe Coordinator of the NASA Science Engineering and Math Academy at Tennessee State University where I hosted and/or facilitated hundreds of workshops on topics in education and presented research at national conferences.

Statistics

I did more statistics in grad school than one should have to do throughout their lifetime... And we didn't just have to DO IT, we had to EXPLAIN it to rooms full of persons more qualified than ourselves. *phew* Glad I only have to explain it to students now!

Study Skills

I have tutored for 20 years. Through personal and professional experience, most of students' academic woes begin with their study and organizational habits. This is one of the topics on which I taught over 7 years in the parent/student workshops.

Vocabulary

We know that synonyms are words with similar meanings -- but one synonym cannot always simply be substituted for another. Nuanced shades of meaning distinguish some synonyms from each other, and rules of word usage often dictate whether they can be applied in the same way.

Writing

I have written a long list of academic articles and chapters in books. In fact, I am tutoring for a season so that I can complete a book I am working on for a publishing company. I love writing and the use of words and grammar to communicate a story or fact. The only thing that is more fun is teaching this love of language to others!
