About Matthew

My father would always make the statement, “I was born at an early age.” As time passes, I realize more and more the truth of that. Being the youngest of four, I did not have the athletic ability or the outgoing personality of my older siblings so I turned to art. My brothers, sister and parents would bring home leftover cardboard, markers, whatever they could find for me to draw with. In High School, I was the entire poster committee, Art Editor of all publications and painted the backdrops for the plays.

I went to college and left one semester short of my bachelors to pursue a career as a designer of Fine China. These were the days before scanners, so besides doing patterns for Fine China such as Lenox, Belleek (I designed the Irish Blessing and Marriage plates), I did the art for Norman Rockwell Limited Edition Plates. I would repaint the Saturday Evening Post Covers in Gouache, do the camera shots and dot etch, etc.. It was a great time as I learned under Louis Ruffalo and Charles Seliger (who was a contemporary of Max Ernst and was on permanent display at the Guggenheim Museum).

Then came computers. I tried my hand at editorial and political cartooning for the Saratogian and Troy Record Newspapers but could not make enough to feed my wife and four children so I went back to school at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and then the Herron School of Art earning my bachelor’s degree. I then became a Prepress Manager, Production Manager and Computer Arts teacher for Ivy Tech College. I have taught students from the ages of 3 to 63 to do landscapes, portraits, realism, caricatures, fantasy and cartooning at Ivy Tech, Herron School of Art Saturday School and The Charlotte Art League.

I have been a member of the CCA Gallery in Indianapolis, the Charlotte Art League and exhibited in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Charlotte and Albany NY.

I have taught ages from 3 to 72. I do not want people to draw or paint like me but to develop their own styles and techniques.
