About Kathryn

Your child’s education is your priority. As a mother, I appreciate that priority, and strive to honor it as a tutor and teacher. I look forward to getting to know you and your child’s educational strengths and needs, and I hope this profile helps you get to know me as a teacher and tutor a little better.

I am certified in to teach grades K-6 and Exceptional Student Education for grades K-12 in the State of Florida. I enjoy the challenges and successes of students across the learning spectrum, and have been fortunate enough to experience working in regular education classrooms, special education classrooms, and inclusion classrooms in which students with special education needs are provided support in the regular education setting. As a result, I have developed a variety of strategies to work with students at all levels. I believe all students are capable of learning, and it is my job as a teacher or tutor to identify their specific strengths and challenges, and to help them to develop the strategies and confidence to become independent, successful learners.

I have a background working specifically with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, Language Disorders, Specific Learning Disorders, and emotional or behavioral challenges, to name a few. I have also taught in classrooms in which more than 50% of my students have English as a second language.

While my skills and love of teaching stretch across all subject areas, I am a lifelong bookworm and as a result have developed a particular passion for teaching reading and writing. Whether it is advanced readers developing higher order thinking skills about their reading, or struggling or beginning readers learning to decode words, I love tapping into the needs of readers as learners. I believe that reading and writing are the cornerstone for all other learning. Getting past roadblocks in being able to decode and comprehend the words in front of you, and then expressing yourself effectively in writing, opens the world in front of you. So let’s get reading!
Please feel free to contact me to further discuss whether I am a good match for your tutoring needs. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach Elementary K-6 and have taught students grades 3 through 5, although I am comfortable with students at lower grades as well. I am familiar with Florida Common Core Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, and am comfortable using a variety of strategies to teach.

Elementary Math

My qualifications include Teacher Certification in the State of Florida in Elementary Education Grades K-6 and Exceptional Student Education Grades K-12. My subject qualifications include Elementary Math, Grammar, Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Special Needs.

Special Needs

My certifications include ESE K-12. I have taught in a self-contained ESE classroom for grades 3-5 with students whose diagnoses include ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Language Disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder. I have helped my students mainstream successfully into a Regular Education Inclusion classroom. I believe all of my students are capable of learning, and my challenge is tapping into their learning style and strengths to help them develop the strategies to become independent, successful learners.
