The best help I have received so far; instead of just memorizing formulas she used associations that were easier to remember.

About Melissa

My love of teaching began in college when I would tutor high school students. I maintained a 4.0 GPA in college while majoring in chemistry and tutoring on the side. I then went on to work in research and development for a chemical firm. Later, I worked as an analytical chemist. When my children came along, I dedicated my time to home-schooling them.

I am now a home-school mother of two straight A students and would like to help your child reach his/her full potential. I learned to speak Spanish fluently while living abroad and am capable of teaching it to others. I have a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and am available for tutoring students in mathematics and science, as well as some elementary subjects.

I love seeing students excel in school and would love to help your child exceed his/her own expectations. I tutor students in a quiet environment that promotes learning. I am good at breaking down hard subjects into small, easy to remember pieces. I will ensure that your child knows the information by giving him/her practice exercises. I only require a 2 hour cancellation notice and love to hear feedback from my parents and students.

I hope you would give me the opportunity to help your child. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1999. In order to obtain this degree, I studied upper level mathematics. Some of the classes I took included Calculus 1, 2, & 3 and Vector Calculus. In mathematics, in order to be successful in these upper level courses, one must have a good foundation in Algebra. Also, as a homeschool mother of an Algebra student, my Algebra skills are kept sharp helping explain the basics to her.

Elementary Math

I am very strong in mathematics. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, which is dependent upon math. In order to obtain this degree, I had to take higher math courses including Calculus 1, 2, & 3 and Vector Calculus. As a homeschool mother of a fifth grader and an eighth grader, I have taught K-6th grade math courses.

Geometry

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1999. In order to obtain this degree, I studied upper level mathematics. Some of the classes I took included Calculus 1, 2, & 3, and Vector Calculus. In mathematics, in order to be successful in these upper level courses, one must have a good foundation in lower level math courses, such as Geometry.

Organic Chemistry

I have a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Spring Hill College (1999). I worked in a research and development lab using, specifically, Organic Chemistry. I also worked as an analytical chemist. In order to obtain a B.S. in Chemistry, I took various chemistry courses, including Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.

Prealgebra

I am very strong in mathematics. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, which is dependent upon math. To obtain this degree, I had to take higher math courses in college including Calculus 1, 2, & 3 and Vector Calculus. As a homeschool mother of an Algebra student, I keep my Pre-Algebra skills sharp and up-to-date.

Proofreading

My proofreading qualifications became evident as I maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout college. I was able to make A's on all my English compositions, as well as essays in other subjects. I am very detail oriented, which helps me to notice grammatical mistakes.

Reading

My qualifications to tutor reading include my being a homeschool mother, my having a Bachelor of Science, and my past testing experience. First, as a homeschool mother of two, I have been teaching my children reading comprehension skills. I am well versed in the educational expectations of children with regard to reading comprehension skills and speed requirements (words per minute). Second, I received my Bachelor of Science from a school that places a high value on a liberal arts education. That education included two years of grammar and literature courses. Last, I made a 30 on the ACT with reading comprehension being one of my highest scores.

Spanish

I lived in South America for 8 years where I learned to speak Spanish fluently. I had formal training from a language institute where I learned Spanish grammar and sentence structure along with pronunciation. Through everyday situations I learned culture and a wide variety of vocabulary. Here in the United States, native Spanish speakers assume that one of my parents is Hispanic and the other American. That, to me, speaks highly of my language level.

I had been stuck for weeks on Central Angles, Arc length, and radians. I was finally able to move past that and on to new topics.
