I am a certified teacher and I have been tutoring for over 10 years. My professional background and education is in engineering, business management, and teaching. I have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri at Columbia, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Secondary Math Education from Villanova University. I received 7-12 Teacher Certification in Pennsylvania and was awarded the ETS Recognition of Excellence for my performance on the Praxis exam, Mathematics Content Knowledge. I have well over 200 college credit hours.
I literally started tutoring in grade school and have been tutoring almost since that time. It is my passion. Tutoring can provide something the classroom simply cannot - personalized learning. My principal aim is to individualize a one-on-one learning experience that helps you achieve your highest potential. I will listen carefully to understand your academic needs and develop a tutoring program that specifically addresses those needs. Nothing is more rewarding than to witness the emergence of confidence when learning leads to understanding. My hope is to help you develop critical thinking skills, gain perspective, and cultivate a sense of self-achievement.
My principal area of focus is mathematics: PreCalculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra, Discrete Math, and Arithmetic. However, I also tutor students in Grammar, Essay Writing, and English as a Second Language (ESL). I have a complete lesson plan to prepare students for the Math and Writing sections of the SAT and the English section of the ACT. I also teach test prep strategies for the ACT and SAT.
I tutor in people's homes in the Lakewood Ranch area only. I also tutor at the Braden River Library, on Rt 70 in Bradenton.
Please note: I tutor only students who are enrolled in a traditional school; I do not tutor FLVS students.
If I get two no shows - I do not get positive confirmation of a cancellation more than four hours before the lesson - all further lessons will be cancelled. I promise to respect your time; please be respectful of mine.
I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals. I am a certified teacher and I have been tutoring for over 10 years. My professional background and education is in engineering, business management, and teaching. I have a Bachelor of Science in Read more

My son is an excellent student but needed a little help in getting his SAT score in the 2000 range. He felt Maureen has given him the extra edge he needs and wishes he would of contacted her before he took them the first time. Great experience!!!
My daughter really enjoyed working with her and they covered material for her to review for her exam next Wednesday. I also want to set up sessions with her to strengthen my daughter's math skills.
Maureen is tutoring my daughter for the ACT and we could not be more pleased! Maureen is a bright and friendly person. Most importantly, my daughter really likes her. Maureen is an excellent communicator, (with both me and my daughter). She gives my daughter 110% effort. In a matter of only 8 weeks we are already seeing a tremendous increase in her ACT practice tests. I could not be more pleased with Maureen; so glad that we found her!!!!
Maureen is timely, patient, and a great teacher. She explains and RE-explains things tirelessly. She never made me feel rushed, or incompetent. She even provided encouraging words about my limited algebra skills. She is just what I need! Thank you Maureen!
She has a knowledgeable approach to SAT preparation, very helpful, generous person.
I believe Maureen will make a huge progress with my son's SAT score. I am glad I made a right choice for my son.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor elementary (K-6) because I have tutored elementary school students in writing, reading, vocabulary and grammar - as well as math and science. I have teachers certification in Pennsylvania and I taught third grade math as a substitute teacher. I also taught a college course for teachers on how to teach elementary school math. The course was based on Sybilla Beckmann's well regarded text, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers. I have my Sarasota County and Manatee County security clearance through the school districts. I am also registered to tutor, as a volunteer, with the Sarasota Housing Authority.
Maureen M. passed a background check on 6/20/13. The check was ordered by Maureen through First Advantage. For more information, please review the background check information page.
