About Maureen

I am a certified teacher and I have been tutoring for over 10 years. My professional background and education is in engineering, business management, and teaching. I have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri at Columbia, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Secondary Math Education from Villanova University. I received 7-12 Teacher Certification in Pennsylvania and was awarded the ETS Recognition of Excellence for my performance on the Praxis exam, Mathematics Content Knowledge. I have well over 200 college credit hours.

I literally started tutoring in grade school and have been tutoring almost since that time. It is my passion. Tutoring can provide something the classroom simply cannot - personalized learning. My principal aim is to individualize a one-on-one learning experience that helps you achieve your highest potential. I will listen carefully to understand your academic needs and develop a tutoring program that specifically addresses those needs. Nothing is more rewarding than to witness the emergence of confidence when learning leads to understanding. My hope is to help you develop critical thinking skills, gain perspective, and cultivate a sense of self-achievement.

My principal area of focus is mathematics: PreCalculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra, Discrete Math, and Arithmetic. However, I also tutor students in Grammar, Essay Writing, and English as a Second Language (ESL). I have a complete lesson plan to prepare students for the Math and Writing sections of the SAT and the English section of the ACT. I also teach test prep strategies for the ACT and SAT.

I tutor in people's homes in the Lakewood Ranch area only. I also tutor at the Braden River Library, on Rt 70 in Bradenton.

Please note: I tutor only students who are enrolled in a traditional school; I do not tutor FLVS students.

If I get two no shows - I do not get positive confirmation of a cancellation more than four hours before the lesson - all further lessons will be cancelled. I promise to respect your time; please be respectful of mine.

I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor elementary (K-6) because I have tutored elementary school students in writing, reading, vocabulary and grammar - as well as math and science. I have teachers certification in Pennsylvania and I taught third grade math as a substitute teacher. I also taught a college course for teachers on how to teach elementary school math. The course was based on Sybilla Beckmann's well regarded text, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers. I have my Sarasota County and Manatee County security clearance through the school districts. I am also registered to tutor, as a volunteer, with the Sarasota Housing Authority.
Thank you!

Study Skills

I have good study skills and I model them for my students. I have also researched efficient and effective study habits.
Study skills include time management, staying organized, prioritizing goals, and self-discipline. Learning is an active process, not a passive one. However, I work with students on their terms and work with their personal preferences — creating a system that will work for them. But I highly recommend methods that have been shown to work. I present options on how to take notes effectively in class. I stress the importance of studying as soon after class as possible; one hour spent soon after class will do as much good in developing an understanding of materials as several hours a few days later. This helps to move information from short-term memory to long-term memory. And psychologists who have researched learning have discovered that, in the long run, several short distributed sessions of study produce better results than one long highly concentrated study session. Active studying requires that one engage as many senses as possible — read, recite, and write. Don’t just study one’s notes; work through problems or questions. And actively ask yourself questions. The self-recitation test preparation method is one of the best: predicting possible test questions and studying them.
In a nutshell, I teach students how to get the most out of class, how to keep their school work organized, and how to prepare for exams. Moreover, I emphasis that academic performance is like any performance — discipline, dedication, and hard work are required for an optimal outcome.

Great tutor. — My son is an excellent student but needed a little help in getting his SAT score in the 2000 range. He felt Maureen has given him the extra edge he needs and wishes he would of contacted her before he took them the first time. Great experience!!! ...
