About Michael

My education includes an MEd in Curriculum & Development with a concentration in English Language Learners. Through these studies, I have gained a broadened knowledge of the humanities and arts. As the child of a reading teacher, I have a good working knowledge of English as well as strong writing skills.

Concerning my secular experience, I have been employed as a Credit and Collections Analyst for 20 years. In that position, I have trained, coached and motivated employees, as well as successfully managing an Accounts Receivables portfolio myself. It is my desire to use that, as well as my formal education, and bring real world secular experience into the classroom. Prior to that I worked in Collections and Customer Service for a major telecommunications company, at which time I had the opportunity to train new employees, and serve on several committees regarding employee development and morale.

I plan to use my employment in the educational field as a way of giving back to the teachers that inspired me to success. I would not have been as successful as I was in the business field had it not been for my instructors while I was a student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

Concerning my secular experience, I have been employed as a Credit and Collections Analyst for 14 years.

I will also continue my own education towards my Masters degree as well as continue to write fiction, something that to this point I have only done for personal enjoyment.

Classics

I have successfully passed the CLEP and Dantes tests on Humanities and Literature.

ESL/ESOL

My education includes a B.A. in Social Studies with a concentration in Education. In addition, since my desired filed is TESL, I took additional classes at Ashford University to prepare me for that field. Through these studies, I have gained a broadened knowledge of the humanities and arts. As the child of a reading teacher, I have a good working knowledge of English as well as strong writing skills.

Public Speaking

Directly connected to effective interpersonal skills are good communications skills. With an undergraduate degree in Social Studies and a concentration in Education, with specific courses taken in Teaching English as a Second Language, I feel that formally I have the training necessary to be successful with my written communication, oral communication, active listening, and public outreach. In addition, growing up in a foreign country among the diplomatic and expatriate community, I went to school with persons from around the world. Foreign language was always a passion of mine and so when I am around people I find it easy to pick up on their accents and diacritics. I make it a point to learn a few polite words in each language of someone that I meet and try to learn their acceptable forms of address, especially in cultures that place emphasis on gender and age when it comes to forms of addressing others. At one point I was bilingual with both English and Spanish, and I can navigate my way through a French speaking country speaking enough to read street signs, menus and following basic directions.

Since I used to live in Jamaica, I am fluent in Jamaican patois. Whether or not that is considered an official dialect of English is up for debate, but it defiantly has its own rules and can be very effective in communicating with someone from the English speaking Caribbean or parts of English speaking Africa when one desires to appeal to native people on a local level.

Social Studies

Being raised in Jamaica, yet educated at British and American style schools, we learned the ins and outs of the governments, systems of justice and administrative procedures of the US, the UK and Jamaica. There was much opportunity in dealing with other cultures. Also, because the local US consulate was out center of activity among the American community in Jamaica, and because so many of the children I was raised among had parents who were in the foreign service, the concept of what it takes to be a Teacher of English Language Learners is not strange to me.
