About Jill

In over 25 years of teaching experience, I have taught just about every subject usually found in high school English and Social Studies departments. I've taught AP courses in American History, European History, World History, American Government and Politics, as well as AP English Literature and Composition and AP Language and Compositioin.

When I tutor history, I'm focused on fulfilling the needs of the student, whether it's greater understanding of a subject, or preparation for a test. I try to make learning fun and connect it to the present. Unless a teacher requires it, I don't emphasize dates but rather what happened, why it happened, and what were the consequences of it happening.

When tutoring English, I focus on analyzing literature, building vocabulary, and developing the ability to articulate, either in writing or in speaking, one's thoughts. My literature students have always done well in their subjects.

When I tutor writing, I want to demystify the writing process. As a writer myself, I know how scary that blank screen can be. But I've developed a process that has helped many students improve their writing.

I love teaching because I love learning. I want everyone to succeed. As I like to say, Get an A with Dr. J!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have always said that if you want to know why the world is the way it is today, study history. I have taught American history and AP US history for over 15 years. I love the subject and love teaching it. I have extensive knowledge in all areas of US history, and I also know a lot of little factoids that can help make it interesting for my students. Many of my former students have told me that it was my class that inspired them to become history majors in college.

I have taken several undergraduate and graduate level courses in anthropology, covering the areas of cultural and physical anthropology. Areas of specialty include Native Americans and Eastern European ethnic groups. I also studied anthropology from the point of view of museum educators, learning how to present information to people who visit exhibits on different groups of people.

Art History

I have studied and taught the history of art, including architecture and photography, as well as visual literacy. I am familiar with all periods, although my areas of special concentration are the classical, Renaissance, and 20th century periods.

I have over 15 years teaching English on the high school and college level. Classes I've taught include writing (creative and expository), American Literature, and AP Literature and Composition. I enjoy working with students on literature and teaching them how to analyze and enjoy the works of good writers and to become better writers themselves.

I feel I am qualified to tutor in film history and criticism. This was one of the required three fields in my Ph. D. studies at NYU (one of the top film schools in the country) and I also included it in my dissertation, which examined, in part, historical films and how historians regard them.

I've also taken courses in French, Russian, Japanese, and Italian cinema, and since leaving school have developed an interest in Middle Eastern films, especially the burgeoning industries in Israel and Iran.

I am certified in English in New Jersey and Florida; taught AP Literature and Language for several years; over ten years experience teaching expository writing.

I have over 20 years teaching English at the high school and college levels, including AP courses. I have also worked as an editor and proofreader for professional writers.

I feel I am qualified to tutor in the subject of religion. I have taught the history of religion in the context of world, American, and European history and have taught World Religions as well. In graduate school I did a lot of research on religious history and doctrines, particularly Jewish and Christian theology. I also presented a paper on the Jehovah's Witnesses at an American Studies Association convention.

SAT Writing

I have tutored many students for the SAT and have been a reader for the College Board grading the SAT essay portion. I've taught writing for over 20 years in high school and college settings.

Social Studies

I believe I am qualified to tutor in Social Studies. I have taught all the subjects usually included in Social Studies departments. They include world, American, and European history, geography, civics, government and politics, and economics. All of these were in a high school setting. In addition, I have a Ph.D. in history and can tutor that subject on the college and university level.

I have taught writing and literature over the years, and vocabulary is a very important part of both. In any subject, I always take the time to highlight words students need to know and help them find ways to understand their proper use. English is a very rich language and I always tell students that the more words you know, the better you can think! I try to make it fun as well as educational.

World History

I have taught AP World History and can help students prepare for the exam not only in the content areas, but in the writing, as I also have experience teaching writing and am familiar with the essays required for the AP World History exam

I have taught writing for over twenty years at the middle school, high school, and college level. I studied methods of teaching writing at USC under Ross Winterowd, one of the nation's experts in the subject.
