Thank you for looking into my profile! I am looking to tutor just a few students this summer 2016. I have ample experience with students of all ages. Even though I am highly math and science oriented, I encourage my students to excel and enjoy all subjects. Professionally, I strive to be competent, punctual, reliable, and prepared.
I just completed my first year of medical school at LECOM Bradenton. In 2012, I graduated from USF (at age 20) with my BA in chemistry/biochemistry and a minor in mathematics. At the time, I mentored for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Since then, I have volunteered for Largo Medical Center, The Children's Dream Fund, Eckerd Community Services, and Disability Resources at SPC. In 2014/2015 I was an academic tutor for All Children's Hospital and I am currently an active Guardian ad litem working for child advocacy in the Florida dependency system.
I am relatively young but disproportionately experienced. I tutored algebra, geometry, precalculus, and calculus often enough that I no longer need a textbook to help a student. I push mental math and steer my students away from the calculator. I used to tutor 6 students/day 6 days/week.
I have experience with ESOL students, IEP’s, ADD, ADHD, and gifted children.
A little about how I realized my passion for education:
In 2009, I began tutoring elementary school children when I was part of the Kiwanis Key Club in 2006. We had a program called Read and Lead where I guided a second grade class through writing assignments. I assisted the teacher as the day came to a close so that she could leave on time, and I learned what children look for in an instructor. In college I started privately tutoring three ESOL children in English and writing. I worked with them for more than five years and eventually took on five more ESOL students who also spoke vietnamese in their homes.
As a tutor, I want most to help others appreciate how fascinating math and science are. During my sophomore year in college – my senior year in high school - my chemistry professor saw that I was helping other students with organic chemistry notes and he requested that I volunteer in the Academic Resource Commons as a tutor. During my final semester in high school I tutored adults who were often much older than me in subjects I loved. I thought it would be intimidating, but I found that my passion for the subjects helped make my elders comfortable with both the subject and our age difference. Thank you for looking into my profile! I am looking to tutor just a few students this summer 2016. I have ample experience with students of all ages. Amie is an excellent tutor with a vast knowledge in the subjects of math and science. She is patient and easy to work with, I highly recommend her.
This is an update to my last review. I have come a long way regarding my math skills and it's all because of Amie's excellent tutoring skills. In the last couple months I have gone from, at best a pre algebra level student to being proficient with graduate level Physics equations and maintaining an A in the class.
We hired Amie for a last minute attempt to raise our son's SAT scores. We only had a week and hired Amie for 5 sessions (not the best plan to enact a change, should have spread it out over weeks). Amie was very flexible and worked well with our son. We had asked Amie to work on both reading and math. While the reading score did not change, his math score shot up from 630 to 730, a huge difference. Our son felt Amie was very easy to work with, provided teaching he could easily understand and followed a good plan of action. Would certainly recommend her. Thanks Amie!
Amie – Wonderful!
She tutored my son in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry as well as preparing him for SAT/ ACT. She is highly knowledgeable, patient, professional and always punctual. It did not take long for my son to raise his grade. Best of all he quickly started being comfortable with the subject. Amie will help the student not only understand the subject but also enjoy it. She is passionate with the subjects she teaches and is able to share it with the student. Our son now feels confident enough to continue on his own. Amie made that happen. I truly will miss Amie! she not only is excellent at tutoring but also a wonderful and caring person. I highly recommend her.
Thank you so much for everything Amie
Amie is right on it. She is professional, kind, and has an amazing knowledge of the subject she is tutoring on. She is extremely helpful in condensing the material into more manageable segments. I have waited to take calculus until the absolute last credits and have been dreading this course although now with her tutoring and support, I know I will be successful in completing calculus this semester.
Thank you, Vicki
I am grateful that I get to share calculus with you. It's a class that really introduces how higher-level math applies to the real world. Thank you for always bringing homework and questions. This will be a great semester. :)
I was not doing well in calculus and she has helped me very much. She explained and simplified everything. More helpful than several other tutors I had. Thanks to her, I am doing well. Would highly recommend her!
Amie has tutored my two children in math on a weekly basis since September 2013. She is extremely knowledgeable, and helps them resolve questions on their homework, reviews test materials with them, and prepares sample problems for them to practice on. She is eager to help and always wants to know how they performed on tests.
She is patient and encouraging. She has also been able to help them in chemistry and general science when they've had questions in those areas. I've been very pleased with Amie - she is punctual, pleasant, and professional, and I believe she has helped my children develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts they are learning and how to put them into practice.
Mrs. P, Your children are both very hardworking and bright individuals. I appreciate that you hold them to a "higher standard" (high A's), and it shows in their performance and use of tutoring time. Hopefully I can continue to work with them in future academic years, to see more growth and excellence.
Amie is wonderful with my son. She is patient, direct, and has a natural ability to access and tap into what works well for the individual student. My son has grown to love his time with her, and has gone from fighting to do his math to saying math is one of his favorite subjects! Thank you, Amie! We are grateful for you!
Thank you, Mrs. B! I enjoy working with your son and I have had the pleasure of building a more personal connection with your family. One of the great things about this tutoring relationship is that your son always does his homework, is prepared and present for lessons, and is respectful. Keep up the good work!
What can I say to describe Amie but "Amazing"! My daughter's confidence level has risen since tutoring began and it is all due to Amie's patience, knowledge, and demeanor. Thanks to her tutoring, my daughter is no longer afraid to ask questions.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you, Mrs. R! I really enjoy working with your daughter. She is always prepared for lessons and demonstrates maturity beyond her age. Our tutoring has been successful because she is completely present during our sessions. Keep up the good work.
There's no question when working with her that she will be the smartest person in the room. But, I did find her disposition and methods of pedagogy wanting. If you do not already love the subject material and/or don't get it the first time, she is not the most understanding or empathetic. A great tutor should be able to get on the student's level and teach the material in a way they understand - this includes pacing, adapting personalities, and techniques for remembering the subject.
In summation, she's highly bright and qualified but does not connect with you or your learning style to ideally teach the subject matter.
The emphasis of this review is on my ability to mesh with this individual. The review fails to mention that we met on very short notice (the student required tutoring for a final exam on a Monday, and I was contacted on the Friday before). I met with the student for a total of three hours and traveled for more than 40 minutes each way to do so because he expressed dire need and preference for my help. I went out of my way to lower my rate for the student, and after my tutoring he received a B on the exam and passed the course. Since our two lessons he has contacted me for aid in other classes. Some of the material in his course required formulas and could not be taught with alternative methods (ie, interest formulas utilizing date tables). Although we may not have connected on an personal level, I feel proud of the service I provided to this student as I was able to help him in a professional capacity.
My daughter takes an online Chemistry class. Amie would look ahead at her assignments and bring in supplies to do lab assignments. She was always concerned that she really understood her Chemistry. She knew how to break down the Chemistry problems so my daughter could do them. Amie is the reason she did so well.
Amie was always on time and would change times if needed. I would highly recommend her for Chemistry tutoring.
We presented Amie with an a very difficult task. My son had failed two geometry tests (one I found out about only that day) and he had only two days to re-take and pass both tests or he would lose the ability to play summer baseball. In one hour, Amie not only managed to go over all the info for both tests, she also left my son with the notes he needed to study further on his own. My son said he felt very comfortable working with Amie, and I could tell she was very knowledgeable, patient, and was able to clearly explain the problems to him. We haven't gotten the results yet, but my son feels confident he passed both tests. I will absolutely be calling Amie if we need a tutor again.
Amie provided exceptional tutoring service to my son! She explained the concepts in ways he could understand and really new the material. My son said Amie was very smart and could help him better than anyone he had worked with. I highly recommend Amie as a tutor and know you will be happy with your progress having her as your tutor.
Amie G. is wonderful and a very knowledgeable tutor. She really made a difference in our daughter's understanding of Algebra 2. We are very appreciative for her help and patience. Thank you for everything Amie.
Amie is a fantastic tutor. Her teaching style as well as her patience allowed my daughter to easily increase her S.A.T. Math score. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Amie as a first choice tutor. You will not be disappointed. Hats off to Amie and WyzAnt.
We hired Amy to tutor our home-schooled daughter (Meghan) who is 10 years old and in the 5th grade. Amy has been with Meghan two days a week / two hours each visit for just over a month now. We can't express enough how much Amy helps keep Meghan on track and engaged. Amy consistently arrives on time with an incredible focus on 'getting the job done' all with a smile and hands-on approach that Meghan really seems to enjoy. Amy definitely speaks the language of Math and Science in a way that Meghan completely understands and responds to.
Amie has definitely helped our son work through his challenges and kept him motivated to complete his tasks. She is prompt, personable, and has provided constructive guidance for him to improve.
I can't thank Amie enough for how she helped my son prepare for the SAT and ACT. She equipped him with the skills to raise his scores well above what he thought he would. She was very patient as she helped edit his essays for college as well. She made this stressful time a wonderful experience!
My daughter was in danger recently of getting a failing grade in math. With Amie’s help, she not only turned her grades around, she made honor roll this last grading period! Currently, my daughter is a straight A student, thanks largely with the tutoring Amie has provided. Thank you Amie! We hope to continue having you as our daughter’s tutor for a long time to come.
Amie is a great tutor that gets results. My daughter needed to improve her ACT score and after working with Amie, she raised her score 3 points! Amie was always on time and flexible with our schedule. She was able to connect with my daughter and give her tools to help her reach her goal. I highly recommend Amie!
I would like to extend my personal thanks to WyzAnt Tutoring and Amie G. We used the WyzAnt website to find our wonderful tutor Amie G. She is helping my 16 year old daughter successfully get through Algebra II and Physics and working with her to improve her standardized test scores. She makes complex problems and concepts understandable. Amie is very organized and punctual. She provides me with feedback about my daughter's progress after every tutoring session. We are very happy with our experience so far with Wyzant and Amie G. I would recommend tutoring from Amie G. to anyone that is struggling with grades or SAT scores.
I decided to take college chemistry I and II over the summer at a very quick pace. Amie has helped me stay on top of my work and really understand the material. She is also flexible with her time and if I need to meet extra on the weekends she always makes time for me.
Our daughter, a 2nd grader, was showing signs of struggle in her math class. After several attempts of us as her parents working with her, we decided to use a tutor. We found Amie who has been dedicated to our daughter's success since day one. Amie understood immediately what our concerns as parents were and what skills and techniques our daughter needed in order to succeed. With every week, we see the improvement in our daughter's skills along with her confidence growing. Although Amie's main focus is math, she is also concerned in how she does in all her subjects. Amie has an excellent sense of knowing exactly the right techniques to teach your child. She keeps your child focused and enjoying what they are learning. Amie also communicates very clearly on our daughter's weekly progress and areas that still need improvement.
Amie helped my nephew tremendously! He had been struggling in his 8th grade math class for months and was anticipating summer school. Amie met with us/him several times(during the last 6 weeks of school)at different convenient locations. She was punctual, never cancelled and always gave him her full time and attention. With her guidance, he excelled enough to get more confidence, focus him on the HW/tests and finally understand the material on hand. Now David can spend his summer participating in local pre-college and volunteering opportunities.
I was having some issues in my Calculus Applications course. I did moderately well on quizzes but did not have a lot of confidence taking my tests. A week before the final, I found Amie, and she was willing to meet with me on short notice. In the three sessions before the test, Amie helped me practice and get my rules and formulas straight. I took my final calm, collected, and just remembered what we went over - I passed scoring 25 points higher than my previous test! Amie is patient, amiable, and AMAZING! I recommend highly!
Amie has been tutoring my daughter and her friend for three weeks now. She alternates between Chemistry Honors and Algebra II Honors depending on what subject the girls feel they need help with that week. My daughter is not a great test taker but she has gotten As on her last two Algebra II tests :) Amie has shown them alternate ways to do some of their Chemistry homework that makes more sense to them than the way the teacher had shown. Amie is very sweet and she makes the girls feel at ease and comfortable asking questions when they don't understand. I would highly recommend her.
Thanks to Amie, both of my daughter's have improved their grades. I have a freshman and sophomore who were struggling in honors level Chemistry, Algebra II, and Spanish. Their grades have improved all to Amie's credit. She has been very patient, held them accountable, and most importantly she has taught them a different approach to studying. My girls look up to Amy and see her as a Mentor. I highly recommend Amie she has restored a much needed sense of accomplishment and success.
Amie was terrific with my son Justin. Saying she was patient would be an understatement. Justin was failing his Chemistry class and Amy worked with him despite the fact he didn't have some of the most basic learning skills like knowing how to use the glossary. But nothing I can say would be better than this ... Justin got a C in his Chemistry exam! And I credit Amie 100% with his improvement. Thank you Amie! Looking forward to hiring you again in the near future to help Justin.
Amie has tutored my daughter in high school math and science for nearly one year. We are currently homeschooling my daughter with the use of an online curriculum and have had some challenges with the course work and online program. With Amie's help, patience, and organization my daughter has been able to not only learn, but to excel in her math and science courses. I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking math and science assistance.
Amie is terrific. She is extremely knowledgeable in geometry. She explains the content in a way my son can understand. He enjoys his sessions with Amie. My son's confidence is steadily improving. Thank you Amie!
I can't say enough about how helpful Amie has been with my son who is preparing for his college entrance exams. Amie quickly developed a great rapport and has excellent teaching skills. While my son can be difficult to motivate at times, she kept him engaged and found creative ways to simplify complex concepts. She was flexible with her time in scheduling sessions, always had a positive attitude, and provided excellent feedback after each session. I strongly recommend Amie, you will not be disappointed with your choice!
Amie is a very good, patient math tutor. She answers her phone calls , is patient with me. The math that Amie is helping me with is veterinary math. That is algebra in form of problems. The last chapters in the veterinary math are very hard and Amie knows how to to it. She is a very encourging tutor. I highly recommend Amie to any one who needs help.
Amie was the third tutor I found for my daughter and she was by far the best.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
