I am a certified teacher with three years experience in first and second grade levels. As a parent I was eager to watch my children grow and learn and the most interesting part is how they each learned differently. This experience gave me an opportunity to understand that the students in my class are the same. They all learn differently.
I am committed to students developing both socially and academically. Each child is a unique individual. Therefore, it is my belief that as an educator to help each individual meet their highest potential. And in doing so I must create an atmosphere where they can grow and improve socially and academically.
I was very intrigued when my students would always be on time for tutoring 2-3 days each week. They were also very attentive and they did not hesitate to participate and ask relevant questions based on the lesson/s.
I help students to understand that all these components help them to understand what they read, what the rules are and how to apply them. I use role plays and other educational games to help students grasp lessons no matter what levels of difficulties are presented.
I use real life situations to teach lessons. I create word problems using all the students names as my journal entry before each lesson. Students will solve these problems independently. I will check each student's work. If there seem to be any students having difficulty, the problem will be done with the whole class.
I will explain to students that each letter is unique and they have unique sounds whether by themselves, blends/ digraphs, double vowels, etc. I will also explain that some have long sounds and some have short sounds depending on the word/s.
I firmly believe that my love for teaching will help students develop a love for learning. I am also aware of and is very sensitive to their individual needs and I will always strive to be the best educator that I can be. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My experience as a teacher has allowed me to successfully help students to master their skills in phonics.
Phonics is the method of teaching people to read and spell based on letter sounds. It is the building block of reading, therefore, there has to be an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds.
Phonics is the first step in learning to read; letters make words and words make sentences. Once you are able to identify your letter sounds you are on your way to learning to read.
Students are able to decode words by sounding them out or blending letters. Students are also told that there are exceptions to the rule of sounding out words; not all words follow the rule. Ex: was.
