University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (DIetetics)
When I began my studies in Dietetics, I had no clue that I was basically training to become a teacher of nutrition to all walks of life. During my four years at UW-Stevens Point, I formed a successful note-taking and studying style that led me to earn highest honors. I also LOVED tutoring Human Physiology and carrying out peer advising. During my last three years as a registered dietitian, I have built my teaching skills as I taught inner-city grade school students, adults, teaching staff, and company employees. Needless to say, I have developed a passion not only for nutrition, but for helping others understand concepts that are difficult or new to them.
My teaching style is definitely not boring. I go out of my way to make education as hands-on as possible. My theory is, "If I'm bored by this lesson, my students certainly will be too!" Each person has individual learning needs and methods that work best, and I try my hardest to cater to my students' strengths. I utilize my Intrinsic Coaching skills to help students gain clarity on their goals and the steps that make sense to achieve them. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I participated in religion class every day during my 13 years of Christian schooling. During those years, we covered everything from basic Bible stories to different religions of the world. I was confirmed in the Lutheran church after two years of training in the catechism. Now, I am an active member at Hope Lutheran Church and both participate in and host Bible studies. My own personal Bible study is a part of my daily activities, and I am certain that this is the most valuable time of my day.
I successfully completed four semesters of food science/food labs during my collegiate training to become a registered dietitian. I created new recipes for the OSF Saint Francis hospital foodservice department, and assisted in managing the department for a short while during my dietetic internship. Over my past five years of practicing as an RD, I have taught hundreds of cooking classes to children and adults of many different cultures and backgrounds. I have also conducted cooking demonstrations on television multiple times.
As part of my bachelor's degree in dietetics, I succeeded in Anatomy, Physiology, and Exercise Physiology courses. During my five years as a registered dietitian, I have taught many lessons on physical activity to elementary students. I also currently coach adults on physical activities that suits their individual wants and life structure.
I completed a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Dietetics in 2010. After completing the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center Dietetic Internship in 2011, I worked three years with Hunger Task Force. I created and executed a children's cooking, gardening, physical activity and nutrition program there, along with providing written and verbal education to adults of all ages and backgrounds. For the past two years, I have been working as an employee wellness contractor. I coach employees one-on-one in improving their health and wellness, and also facilitate group lunch and learns at different businesses. Lastly, and certainly not least, I am role modeling and teaching my 2-year-old positive nutrition habits.
