About Barbara

My complete, thirty-eight years of experience in public education includes teaching (and counseling) from grades eight through the university level. I taught college English 101 and other classes for 20 years. My expertise is in teaching students how to prepare and proofread their written work. I especially emphasize grammar and punctuation so that their writing will be clear to the readers of their papers, but I also show them how to organize, structure, and expand their sentences and paragraphs.

My career encompassed work in several schools in Arizona public districts, public community colleges, and the University of Arizona. My students in the community colleges ranged from high school age to adults. At the UA, I was a coordinator for graduate students in the College of Education. After retiring from the state of Arizona system, I worked in Florida, where I now reside, for nine years as a high school guidance counselor. In all, I worked for six public school districts, about 5 community colleges and one University.

No, I do not hold state certificates any longer, as I have been retired from the Florida schools for five years, but I can provide a resume and letters of recommendation from previous employment. Unfortunately, many supervisors and administrators with whom I worked since 1972 have passed on, but I can provide some phone numbers of recent districts at which I was employed. The last Arizona district I worked in was a position I had for 16 years; my position in Florida was for nine years. I held certificates in English, Guidance and Counseling, and Supervisory positions. At the school in Arizona, I was the supervisor of the after-school tutoring program for several years.

My education includes a BS from Boston University, and M.Ed. from the University of Arizona, and 54 graduate credits above the M.Ed. from various universities such as the University of Phoenix, Nova, and the three Arizona state universities. My student teaching was done in Westwood, Massachusetts and my counseling internship was done in Tucson, Arizona.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I taught middle school and high school English for about 4 years. I taught English 101 for about 20 years. I was in charge of an after-school tutoring program for several years at a high school. My major in college, at Boston University, was English Education.

Proofreading

Having taught English 101 for many years, I proofread thousands of papers in order to provide guidance to my students on how to improve their writing.

Vocabulary

I rarely find a word in what I, personally, am reading, for which I cannot determine the meaning from the context. I encourage students to look up words they do not know and cannot infer the meaning of from the context. I do not let them use words they do not understand.

Writing

I taught English 101 for many, many years. I wrote course descriptions for the University of Arizona course catalog. My M.Ed. was earned earlier at that institution.

In past employment, I also wrote course description catalogs for high schools and was called upon to write grant proposals, and they were subsequently funded. I also wrote scholarship bulletins and counselor news articles for local newspapers in the communities in which I worked. I began teaching in 1972 in Arizona.
