About Marc

I have a background of more than forty years of teaching, tutoring, and presenting ideas, and my students benefit from the depth and breadth of my experience. In that time, I have tutored children, teens, and adults in a variety of subjects, including: reading, writing, creative writing, journalism, grammar, test preparation, acting, directing, video production, and meditation. I have the tools and techniques to make learning fun and relevant. My tutoring sessions are never boring. I am especially good at simplifying seemingly complex problems. I always seek to put myself in your shoes, approaching subject matter from your perspective. In this way, I can customize instruction to your individual needs and experience.

My goal is to help you achieve mastery of specialized material and to understand that material in a wider context. Whether 6 or 60, my students benefit from my educational philosophy: The purpose of education is to learn how to learn. You will be prepared to pass tests, and you will find future study easier and more interesting. Everyone is naturally curious, and all curiosity is a kind of intellectual curiosity - a desire for knowledge. Using your own innate intellectual curiosity, I will guide you to proficiency in writing, reading, and speaking.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

BA Honors English, Rutgers University
MA Communications, University of Iowa

SAT Writing

I have won numerous writing awards in high school and college. I have been writing stories, essays, articles, books and scripts for the past 40 years. I have the ability to spot and correct subtle weaknesses in writing. Writing, the most personal academic pursuit, gives the learner the opportunity to be creative.

Study Skills

In 1988 I received a grade of "A" in "Intro to Research" while attending graduate school at the University of Iowa (taught by the well known communications scholar Samuel Becker). Writing papers for PhD level courses refined my study and research skills. I have taught study skills at the elementary, high school, and college levels. I am familiar with common study barriers faced by individual students, and I can help show learners how to overcome these obstacles.

Video Production

I was chosen the 1989 National Graduate Film Scholar while attending the MFA program in Film & Video Production at the University of Iowa. I have more than 25 years experience in video production, pre-production, and post-production. I own a video production company, and samples of my work can be seen on request.
