About Alana

I've always been one to benefit from private tutoring sessions. The one-on-one help and private attention always made me feel more comfortable learning at my own pace, asking the questions I wanted, pretty much having the focus be completely on me! This is your time to ask of me what you'd like, at your pace and comfort level, but still prepare to be challenged! I'm a friendly and patient young lady, but take studying seriously, as you also do, since you're being proactive and looking for a tutor.

I like to make my tutoring sessions fun, as well. They will not be boring study drills with your eyes drifting to the window or wondering what that Instagram notification was about. I have tutored young children (under age 6) and adults my age (I'm older than I look!) and incorporate effective teaching methods and games to make your lesson enjoyable and stick with you! American Sign Language is my fourth language and I'm on course to be a certified interpreter. English Language and Literature was my major in college and my Master's Degree is in Journalism (so I know writing!) and I've been editing friends' college essays and papers, resumes and cover letters, and even emails for years and years. Let's work together to help you get to the next level of your true achievement potential.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Hard Of Hearing

Hearing loss is on a continuum. There are many people who have hearing impairments, but are not classified as Deaf. I have taught both hard of hearing and Deaf populations, and therefor am sensitive and knowledgeable to these various needs of the Deaf/HOH community. I am working at a school for the Deaf this year, while in advanced college level ASL courses, which has certainly prepared me to teach levels 1-4.

Public Speaking

My Master's in Broadcast Journalism prepared me to speak in front of small and large audiences and in various settings. Public speaking can induce anxiety and other inhibiting feelings. I have techniques to help my students overcome their fears and gain the confidence they need. I also work on diction and enunciation with public speaking; being on camera and live on air was excellent experience for me to become skilled in this area.

Reading

I majored in English at Smith College, am professionally licensed in the state of Florida to teach English Language and Literature, and have been helping friends and family with their reading, writing, and oral language skills for years. I am also multi-lingual, which often helps with students who do not speak English as a first language.

Sign Language

American Sign Language is a visual language, and I am currently pursuing a national certification in interpreting. Working in theater and dance my whole life has certainly helped me with my fluency in ASL, and I am passionate about communication and finding the best ways to teach this very interactive language. Every student processes visual and auditory stimuli at a different pace, and working at a school for the Deaf this year, while in advanced college level ASL courses, has certainly prepared me to teach levels 1-4.

Writing

I am a professionally licensed English teacher in the state of Florida, and have been tutoring English and writing for many years now. I speak multiple languages so have also worked with those learning English as a second language; translating ideas from one language to another can be difficult, but I can help with that! We'll get you on the track you need to be!
