About Marcie

Your success is my goal. I love tutoring; to me, it means making a difference in someone's - your - future. There's little that compares to sharing the joy when my students tell me their GRE or SAT scores, that they got the 'Pass,' or have been accepted to the college of their choice! I love what I do, and I'm super proud of all of my students.

Since 2008, I have been providing private tutoring for high school and college students in a variety of subject areas such as Alg 1, Alg 2, Trig, Geometry, English, Language Arts, etc. With regards to GRE, FTCE, TABE, SAT, ACT, PERT, and other test preparation, I have helped my students get into their desired schools by helping them with understanding/practicing on the specific test formats, reaching score goals, improving school grades, improving college resumes and application essays, etc. I also provide ongoing support and encouragement throughout the entire process, as well as provide tips on ways to reduce test anxiety. Every one of my students is unique, and each has differing needs, strengths, and weaknesses, I tailor each session to best meet my students' needs and goals. I also take the tests and continually work to improve what I do so that I stay current, and can provide the most effective test-taking tips and strategies. My students achieve success!

Why I do what I do: My son (as well as many others) has difficulty in traditional classroom settings, and sometimes he doesn't understand or he needs a little more help. But, the teachers keep moving forward, whether or not he's 'getting it,' and as he gets older, classwork has gotten more difficult. After years of hoping someone else would figure out how to help him (and other students) truly reach their academic potential, I decided to DO something about it. I became that person. Now, I use out-of-the-box, evidence-based learning techniques and approaches so that students not only learn, but also gain confidence in their own abilities. I love what I do. Guiding students, alleviating some of their and their families' stress, and sharing in the excitement of D's to A's and acceptance letters feels really, really great.

I have a Master's of Education degree from Sierra Nevada, and a BA in Psychology from Rutgers University. Thank you for reading my profile! I look forward to hearing from and working with you! :-)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

For the past 4+ yrs, I have worked and had great success with children with special needs; the majority of whom had difficulties in traditional classroom settings due to ADD/ADHD, anxiety, attachment, trauma/loss, shyness, depression, and other learning delays. According to the NIMH, 1 out of every 5 students has ADD/ADHD or a similar issue that affects their academic success, however, teachers often lack resources, support, training, understanding, and/or time to meet their educational needs. There are many, many studies on various effective out-of-the-box, innovative teaching strategies, yet these amazing, intelligent students often fall through the cracks. I've done the research, and I know how to apply these strategies. I also know that every student is unique and has his/her own learning style. My son was my first student, and over the years, I've worked with students, as well as provided training/education to parents and teachers. In addition, I am in the process of founding/opening a private school in Palm Beach County that utilizes a variety of evidence-based teaching strategies and is dedicated to the academic achievement as well as social/emotional wellness for students who would better reach their potential in a more community-based environment.

Praxis

The Praxis/FTCE are exams required for teaching certification. The general exams test: reading comprehension, writing ability, grammar, math skills (up to about the Alg 2 level), education, teaching principles/techniques, and other information specific to education (it is assumed that those taking the tests have had the necessary education courses and teaching experience required for education degrees). I've taken these tests, I have a Masters of Education, and have been tutoring students on the Praxis (for those states that require it) and FTCE (in FL) for several years. I also took the main FTCEs as well as the middle/high school math subject test this past September to make sure that I fully understand the recent changes to the tests and how to tutor for them.

Public Speaking

For more than 15 years, I have worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a marketing and communications specialist. One of the services I provide is speaker training for doctors/healthcare professionals, sales teams, and marketing personnel. In addition, I've given and coordinated many, many seminars, symposia, etc., and I've learned the hard way all the things that could possibly go wrong and how to be proactive in preparing for the unexpected. I've also learned how to teach/train in such a way that I can leverage each individual's strengths and enhance their confidence and overall performance.

Marcie is not just a great tutor but she is really making my daughter feel comfortable and confident! No tutor has ever done that before with our daughter and I feel that it is a very important part of studying for the SAT/ACT.
