About Alan

I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics and a Master's Degree in Meteorology and Oceanography. I completed my Ph.D. degree in Meteorology and Applied Mathematics. I taught high school mathematics right out of college and then spent 35 years working for the Federal Government as a Meteorologist/System Engineer. As part of my duties in the Federal Government, I was Project Leader for the Training Program for the National Weather Service. This included planning and conducting all aspects of training which pertained to operational weather forecasting and severe thunderstorms radar interpretation. In addition, while at the Federal Aviation Administration, I initiated and created Aviation Weather Courses (basic and advanced) for technical and non-technical personnel.

I also was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Meteorology at Suffolk College (NY) during the 1989-1990 academic year. I developed and taught several undergraduate and graduate courses in basic and applied meteorology.

I specialize in tutoring math, earth sciences, and the general sciences for success in school and on mathematics exams (e.g., SAT, GRE). I make learning fun by challenging but not overwhelming the students. I assign changeling homework after every lesson, and provide periodic assessments and progress reports.

I try to be flexible with time. While I do have a 12-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes. To ensure that students have a quiet and comfortable study space to work with me, I can tutor them at my home or a mutual agreeable location. However, I am happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
