I believe that teaching is about listening and observing how the learner is reacting to what is being said and adjusting your communication to their learning style.

I am a retired math teacher from the Rochester, New York area. I have taught at the middle school, high school and college level. I also taught student teachers how to be effective educators. My strength is being able to explain the concepts of math in everyday terms. People tell me all the time "Why didn't they just say that??".

I have taught everything from adding fractions to calculus II. At the local community college in Rochester, I was always at the top of the student surveys. One year 100% of my college students recommended me. If I accept you as a pupil, I am willing to GUARANTEE you will see an improvement in your grade.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the foundation for the math courses that follow. In order to do well, students must UNDERSTAND the concepts presented not merely “get the answer.” I have had great success teaching the concepts as well as the mechanics in a fun and interesting way. You’re never too old or too young to laugh while learning math!
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 delves deeper into the concepts and skills introduced in Algebra 1 and introduces the beginning of analysis skills using the skill set mastered in Algebra 1. In order to do well, students must UNDERSTAND the concepts presented not merely “get the answer.” I have had great success teaching the concepts as well as the mechanics in a fun and interesting way. You’re never too old or too young to laugh while learning math!
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus I is primarily concerned with understanding the idea of a derivative, techniques of derivation and applications of derivatives. Calculus 2 covers integration in the same manner. In order to do well, students must UNDERSTAND the concepts presented not merely “get the answer.” I have had great success teaching the concepts as well as the mechanics in a fun and interesting way. You’re never too old or too young to laugh while learning math!
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry uses some different skills from those used in algebra. Some of those skills are memorization and presenting concise arguments. In order to do well, students must UNDERSTAND the concepts and the logical flow of thought in any argument. I have had great success teaching the concepts as well as the mechanics in a fun and interesting way. You’re never too old or too young to laugh while learning math!
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra is a basic skills course which includes factoring and set theory. I have had great success teaching the concepts as well as the mechanics in a fun and interesting way. You’re never too old or too young to laugh while learning math!
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus reviews concepts and skills introduced in Algebra 2 and introduces students to exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences, series and other topics continuing to build on the student’s analytical skills. In order to do well, students must UNDERSTAND the concepts presented not merely “get the answer.” I have had great success teaching the concepts as well as the mechanics in a fun and interesting way. Trigonometry

Trigonometry requires familiarity with the unit circle along with skills used in algebra. However, teaching trigonometry should be tied to a functional analysis approach in order for the students to do well. Fun and patient tutor

Phil does a great job with my son. He is knowledgeable, engaging, and seems truly invested in how my son is doing. My son’s confidence in geometry has greatly improved since meeting Phil!

Great lesson with Phillip

Philip was able to accommodate us on short notice to help my daughter who is taking Pre-calc over the summer and was having difficulty with a topic. The lesson went well and my daughter thought he was very helpful!

Great tutor, great experience

Philip has been providing calculus tutoring for my son for several months. His knowledge and ability to teach are exceptional. However, what really stands out is Philip's ability to connect and engage with my son. I would highly recommend Philip.

Wonderful tutor

My daughter was reluctant to do after school tutoring. With Philip's sense of humor, energy, and patience, she actually looks forward to her Algebra 1 tutoring! He knows when to hold back if he thinks my daughter has "information overload". A passionate teacher with the ability to really get through to the learner.

Much More Than A Tutor -- He Really Gets It!

Middle School Honors Algebra and Honors Geometry are tough, even for the best students. The challenge is often compounded by teachers who have difficulty in three key areas: (1) explaining concepts to students;, (2) teaching students how to "think"; and (3) properly preparing students for tests and FSA exams. Phil excels in all three areas. My daughter was struggling with Honors Algebra during the second semester of 7th grade. We tried three different tutors who were adequate enough to get her through the rest of the year. When the 8th Grade school year rolled around, however, we got smarter. My daughter began working with Phil from Day 1 in Honors Geometry. What a difference! Phil has the ability to relate to students. He built an outstanding rapport with my daughter through communication, trust, respect, and humor. Phil not only took the time to get to know my daughter, but he also bonded with me, my wife, and the rest of my family. My daughter worked with Phil the entire school year and made straight A's in Honors Geometry. Phil not only went over concepts with her but, more importantly, gave her the tools and guidance she needed to be able to "think" on her own and properly approach problem-solving. My daughter was actually able to apply many of these same strategies in her other classes. Phil is extremely patient, has a great sense of humor, and is a true people person. My daughter looks forward to each session with him. Phil is also readily available for special sessions and extra preparation prior to tests and exams. I am thrilled to have Phil as my daughter's tutor and give him my highest recommendation. He really gets it!

Best Tutor.... Look no further!!!

My daughter has been with other tutors but Philip has been the most effective getting her grade up from a C to an A. She takes algebra 1 in 7th grade and it's very fast paced. He fills in all the gaps. He makes her confident and encourages her to take the challenge. I hope he will continue to take her through high school !!!

Great Tutor!!!

This is the best tutor by all means. He is patient and knows how to interact with students. I was being tutored by someone else for college calculus. When they could no longer accommodate me, I reached out to Mr. P who took the time to look over all my classwork and test. Needless to say, the next three tests including my final were all A's! This tutor ROCKS!
