About Muhammad

I have been working in the computer field for over 15 years. I began taking classes at a local community college and found the curriculum too slow-paced, given the dynamic nature of the IT field. Time was of the essence since whatever I had learned soon became obsolete. I therefore decided to pursue the "On Job Training" method, supplemented by several IT boot-camp courses.

I had started out as a hardware tech, working at a computer shop. Soon after I began contracting for corporations, moving to networking and architecture domains. I started working for National Finance Company, National Auto Finance, AT&T and Merril Lynch in this capacity.

I developed an interest in software and after a few courses in SQL, Visual Basic and MS Access, began work as a report writer for a real-estate firm and Six Continents Hotels. Driven by passion I started compensating for the lack of experience by immersing myself into the work all my waking hours. I soon gained a level of expertise to design and write my own software. Initially I used MS Access but as the need for scalability increased, I began coding in SQL Server and ASP. The switch to .Net was a welcome change but there is still a lot to be said about the simplicity of classic ASP. I then worked as a report writer, tooler and systems engineer for Bass Hotels (now Intercontinental Hotels), IBM, HP and Microsoft.

Over the past 15 years I've build a level of expertise in a wide range of fields in IT. One secret that's helped me throughout my career is teaching. My Western Civ Prof once told me "The best way to learn something is to teach it." I've followed this advice throughout my career and is a principle I often impart on to my students. I am naturally inclined towards teaching and that is my passion. What I've learned and teach is the meat and potatoes of getting the job done. I don't waste time and I like to structure what I teach in a progressive model.

It was a real pleasure working with Lemuel. He has been one of my best students, soaking up concepts and ideas like a sponge. He was not in it just to turn in an assignment, he wanted to learn the nuts and bolts of how everything works. When a student shows such enthusiasm, it makes it easy for the teacher to teach.

Lemuel not only aced his assignment, because of him, his entire group got an A and graduated!

I wish Lemuel all the best and would love to work with him in the future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Generally, in Math, understanding of concepts are often built upon other concepts. When you miss some key concepts, it creates a gap because of which you are unable to grasp the more complex concepts.

ASP.NET

My major skill set is ASP.Net. I have written several apps and have published several web sites which are live at the moment.

Desktop Publishing

I have extensive experience with Desktop Publishing software. I was a typesetter for MinuteMan Press and have used Quark Express, PhotoShop, CorelDraw, MS Publisher and am thoroughly familiar with all the styling options in MS Word for publishing a book.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've been tutoring K-6th grade kids for 15 years with a very high rate of success. Failing kids have been able to turn their grades around and start scoring straight A's. My method is to target the areas where they are missing a conceptual understanding, teach them that concept and have them practice through repetition until it becomes "part of their DNA".

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored several students who need help learning English. I am fluent in Tamil, Urdu, Hindi, Malayalam and of course, English. I speak conversational Spanish and understand a little German and French. Having the knowledge of multiple languages makes me a good candidate to teach English to those whose native tongue is not English.

Hindi

I am fluent in Hindi. I can read, write and speak Hindi and have taught it to several students in the past. I also teach how to read Hindi (Devnagari script) within 1 week.

Microsoft Access

I am an expert with MS Access. I've written several applications as well as taught MS Access to students for several years. I am well-versed in VBA and databases.

Microsoft Project

I've been working with MS Project for over 10 years. I've also worked at Microsoft and taught Microsoft employees in use of MS Project. I'm versed in the latest versions as well.

Microsoft Publisher

I am well-skilled in MS Publisher. I have published books as well as created all the designs for my own wedding cards with mail-merge, thereby sending each guest a customized wedding invitation card followed up by thank you notes. I worked as a typesetter for MinuteMan press and have a very good understanding of desktop publishing software.

Microsoft Windows

I am certified in Microsoft Windows Operating systems both workstations and servers. I have been a part of the cutting edge technology promoted at Microsoft by early adoption of the upcoming technologies not even released to the public.

I've been mastering Windows since 3.1 days in 1993.

Networking (Computer)

I have passed 5 Microsoft exams and have been a professional Network Administrator for 10 years. I am well-versed in wiring, routing technologies and Windows Domain Model as well as Active Directory. I also administer Exchange server.

Prealgebra

Often times with math, the student only struggles when there is a roadblock. My methodology focuses on finding the weak points and strengthening them with repetitive application of a newly learned skill.

Study Skills

As I've been a tutor for over 25 years on various subjects, I've developed a host of standards and conventions which help a student perfect their study skills. Methods like the Outline Format to help break down complex concepts into simpler ones, scheduling, task and time tracking, productivity skills and good worth ethics help students get on track fast. Regardless of the subject, these simple yet effective practices go a long way in allowing the student to catch up and excel in their field of study. I am adept with technologies which allow for the dissemination of the classes over remote sessions and the built in tools on this website certainly facilitate this better.

Turkish

I speak fluent Turkish. I was born in Ankara, and educated in English and Turkish. I'm educated in Theatre and Ceramics at the university level.

Video Production

I have been a producer at ScanTV in Seattle, Washington for 4 years. I know about lighting, angles, white balance, sound and story boarding.

Visual Basic

I have been trained in Visual Basic from Productivity Point International and I have 10 years of experience in it. I've used it in developing applications, web sites (ASP and ASP.Net) as well as VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) which is used in Excel, Word and Access.

Web Design

I have extensive experience with web design. I know HTML, CSS, Javascript, ASP.Net and SQL Server. I've worked for Microsoft for 5 years developing applications.
