Bennington College (Master's)
University of Louisiana PhD Creative Writing (Graduate Coursework)
I have been a tutor for 14 years. I have two BA degrees. The first one is in English with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric. My second bachelor degree is in Arts and Humanities with a concentration in Linguistics. I have a Master of Fine Art degree from Bennington College. I have written several books and founded one literary review. I currently teach 9th and 11th grade English at G-Star School of the Arts. This is my second year of teaching at G-Star and I thoroughly enjoy it. I have passed all of my teacher certification tests and will have my professional certification in June. In August, I will be teaching writing at a college and embarking on earning my PhD in English. Writing, reading, and teaching are my true passions.
I can often get students to be more enthusiastic about reading and am adept at teaching close reading skills to struggling students. Expanding student's vocabulary is a passion of mine and I have lots of fun ways to do so. I have helped adults prepare for the GRE. I have taught students to improve their scores on the SAT and ACT. I can also prepare students for the FSA test. The FSA is significantly different than the FCAT. I have taken multiple training seminars on teaching the FSA and I know how to grade the written portion of the test. I can also ameliorate student's fears of writing. I have a sure fire method of eliminating writer's block. If you listen to me and agree to practice writing for 15 minutes a day - I promise you will never feel like you cannot write. You can always write. I will show you how. There are no bad writers. We are all evolving and learning. I will help you get your writing, reading, and interpreting skills to where they need to be. I can also help adults with their memoirs, work of fiction, academic writing, and poetry.
I am familiar with modern as well as classical literature. I have some experience with teaching ELL and LEP students. I have not had extensive ESOL training and I am not proficient in speaking Spanish or Creole. I can proofread your child's work and help them better organize their paper. I can teach MLA and APA style writing and referencing. I am open to working with students with disabilities. I tend to have a good rapport with autistic spectrum and ADHD students.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
