About Spencer

Greetings!

My name is Spencer and I am a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic University, where I attained two bachelor's degrees in chemistry & political science along with a minor in sociology and numerous university honors. I've worked as a university tutor at FAU since 2014 and as a private tutor since 2016, and I will be starting this school year as a high school chemistry & physics teacher! Throughout my years assisting students of all ages and abilities I have learned what works and what doesn't. Typically, just re-lecturing material won't cut it for most students, so in my experience I have found that students need to be actively engaged with the material to effectively process and, ultimately, understand it. This necessitates students (as well as tutors!) playing an active role in the learning process, and is the approach I have utilized in all my interactions with students at all levels of the educational hierarchy (from elementary school students to non-traditional college students and everywhere in-between).

My philosophy to teaching is all about active participation and constant communication between myself and my students; I will NEVER rush my students in learning a particular concept, nor will I feed them terms and formulas to merely memorize without adequately understanding why they're important/how they work. From the hard sciences to the humanities, be it chemistry, physics, history, civics, at any level of difficulty (regular, remedial, honors/advanced, AP/AICE/IB, college, graduate-level work) I am sure we can tackle any topic together in a fun and intriguing way! :)

I look forward to your future correspondence! All times & locations are flexible and my standard, hourly rate is $50 (I am open to price negotiations along the lines of group rates and package deals, please feel free to contact me for more details!)

Warm regards~
-Spencer

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

My love of history goes back as far as early grade school and has remained one of my most favorite subjects to learn and help others learn. My Bachelor's degree in political science and minor in sociology has engulfed me with a great deal of American History as it pertains to those subjects in various areas of study. I also took the AP U.S. History course in high school and received a maximum score of 5 on the nationally standardized exam. I have experience tutoring students in general history courses as a university-employed tutor over the past two years. I have learned that when learning history it is not so much about memorizing specific dates or people but more generally picking up on trends and often seeing the bigger picture, and this will be my goal when working with any student in the field of history.

Chemistry

I recently graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in chemistry with honors from Florida Atlantic University, along with a certification from the American Chemical Society. I attained As in both general chemistry and organic chemistry as well as multiple other upper-level chemistry courses.

In addition to this, I have been a university-employed tutor/SI Leader for the past two years focusing primarily on helping students in general chemistry. In my experience, I have learned where students are most prone to getting confused or mixed up on concepts and the best way to present the material in in a clear and coherent manner that leads to greater retention and comprehension of the curriculum.

Lastly, I simply love learning and, even more so, helping others learn a subject that they were previously struggling with. I have received numerous awards for "Best Tutor" for my dedicated work with students and have been told by many that I am a natural and should be teaching the course. These statements are of course often exaggerated by happy students who finally "get it" but I hope this illustrates, in part, why I think I would make an excellent chemistry tutor for you!

Government & Politics

I recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in political science from Florida Atlantic University with honors along with a minor in sociology and a second degree in chemistry. I have a great deal of experience working with students in political science courses, designing lesson plans and exam reviews for hundreds of students at a time as a university-employed tutor as well as working one-on-one and in small groups. Furthermore, during my high school years I took AP American Government & Politics and received a maximum score of 5 on the nationally standardized exam.

Organic Chemistry

I recently received my Bachelor's degree in chemistry where I took and passed with As both Organic Chemistry 1 & Organic Chemistry 2, as well as a two-credit Organic Chemistry Lab. Effective understanding of the principles inherent in organic chemistry fundamentally depend on a sound grounding of general chemistry which is the subject I principally teach. That being said I am happy to review any chemistry topic with students seeking help in this subject as all chemistry is dictated by the same general laws and principles.

Physical Science

I recently graduated with my Bachelor's in chemistry, with honors, taking numerous "physical science" courses in both chemistry and physics. Additionally, I have worked as a university tutor over the past three years and have experience working with students in a gamut of physical science courses including physics and chemistry as well as geography and geology. That being said, I do not claim to be an expert in the field, but rather an arbiter of information provided through resources I would expect the student to bring to any session. Together I am sure we can attain a greater understanding of any subject material we would like to cover.

Political Science

I recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in political science from Florida Atlantic University with honors and have taken numerous courses in the fields of political science, international relations and comparative politics. I also have a great deal of experience working with underclassmen in political science courses, designing lesson plans and exam reviews for hundreds of students at a time as a university-employed tutor. Regular correspondence with my political science professors has given be a great deal of insight into the scope and level of comprehension students of politics are meant to grasp at various stages throughout their scholastic careers.

Sociology

I am a recent college graduate from Florida Atlantic University where I attained two Bachelor's degrees with honors. I also added a minor in sociology to my curriculum vitae, achieving a 4.0 GPA in all my sociology courses. Following in line with my tutoring experience in the hard sciences, social science learning is a true passion of mine which I hope to share with any student I might be working with. I feel I am more than equipped to help students break down often complex, intricate concepts into their smaller pieces to gain a deeper understanding of the question being considered. Deconstruction is a key analytical tool in sociology, as is finding trends and even outlier cases. All these tools must be utilized in such a broad field as the study of society, and I hope to help students use these tools when making their sociological observations and hypotheses.

World History

I recently received my Bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in sociology, areas of studies which heavily emphasize the effective use of history to reflect on political and social characteristics of modern society. As the famous adage goes, "those who fail to study history are destined to repeat" and I have long had a deep passion for the study history, often reading various history books I've collected through my years just for fun. In high school I took both AP World History and AP American History, passing both exams and receiving college credit. Any lessons in this subject would necessitate the use of a student's history book for reference but I am sure working together we can reach a deeper comprehension of any historical topic in the vast span on human history.

Knowledgable in multiple subjects.

Great tutor. Works well with my high school son who can be difficult and typically hates tutors but agreed readily to multiple sessions after working with Spencer. I Highly recommend him.
